Freedom: who are its real friends?

It doesn’t seem very hard to find liberal New Yorkers who support – yes, support – IRS discrimination against their perceived political opponents:

But I’ll make it up to you, with something inspiring:

Via Steve in the comments. While I don’t know anything about Senator Guillory, and I myself remain an Independent (not a Republican), his words ring true:

…the Left is only concerned with one thing: control. And they disguise this control as charity. Programs such as welfare, food stamps: These programs aren’t designed to lift black Americans out of poverty; they were always intended as a mechanism for politicians to control the black community.

The idea that blacks, or anyone for that matter, need the government to get ahead in life, is despicable. And even more important, this idea is a failure! Our communities are just as poor as they have always been. Our schools continue to fail children. Our prisons are filled with young black men who should be at home, being fathers. Our self-initiative and our self-reliance have been sacrificed in exchange for allegiance to our overseers, who control us by making us dependent on them.

Sometimes I wonder if the word ‘freedom’ is tossed around so frequently in our society that it has become a cliché.

The idea of freedom is complex and it’s all-encompassing. It’s the idea that the economy must remain free of government persuasion. It’s the idea that that the press must operate without government intrusion. And it’s the idea that the e-mails and phone records of Americans should remain free from government search and seizure. It’s the idea that parents must be the decision-makers in regard to their children’s education, not some government bureaucrat.

But most importantly, it’s the idea that the individual must be free to pursue his or her own happiness, free from government dependence and free from government control. Because to be truly free is to be reliant on no one, other than the Author of our destiny…

  1. Yesterday the Tea Party had one of there normall peaceful rallies in Washington protesting the IRS abuses against them during the 2012 election. It was rather huge rally for a Wednesday. My guess is that they even cleaned up after they were over. Of couse I am sure that the MSM did not report on the gathering, as usual, it does not fit their profile of those radical Tea Party types ………. who feel like government has become far too big and too intrusive.

  2. The ignorance of these people is amazing.

My hypothesis: once anyone begins to really educate themselves about political history and economics, they will cease to be leftist (on economic policies). The intelligent people I know who are liberal simply seem to confuse personal generosity with legislated generosity (which doesn’t exist). And in the process, they lose sight of the fact that many of the policies they support violate their fellow citizens.

It is much sadder when people are confused (or ignorant) to the point where they actively want to violate their fellow citizens (like people who say its a great thing for government bodies to go after people with views different from their own).
