Something is rotten in the city of Detroit

Detroit, a city run by liberal Democrats for generations, continues to struggle. A post at the Economic Collapse Blog reminds us of just how far it’s fallen. Here’s a small teaser:

The following are some facts about Detroit that are absolutely mind-blowing…

1 – Detroit was once the fourth-largest city in the United States, and in 1960 Detroit had the highest per-capita income in the entire nation.

2 – Over the past 60 years, the population of Detroit has fallen by 63 percent.

[...]
14 – The murder rate in Detroit is 11 times higher than it is in New York City.

15 – Crime has gotten so bad in Detroit that even the police are telling people to “enter Detroit at your own risk”.

UPDATE: State-level government also affects our lives. It’s worthwhile to look at freedom in the 50 States.

The index ranks the States for both personal and economic freedom and produces composite rankings. Guess what? Michigan is in the lower third. New Jersey, California and New York are dead last. Is Detroit the future of NYC and Los Angeles?

  1. While a order of magnitude larger, the death-spiral of Detroit is following the same lethal trajectory of Camden, New Jersey…only half-a-century later.

First the railroads shops and the massive NY Shipbuilding Co. shipyards closed along with the hundreds of small-business foundries, tool-and-die and machine shops that supplied the yard. Then the waterfront heavy industries closed when the shift to railroad put them on the wrong-side of the Delaware River. Then the light manufacturers like RCA Corp., American Tool, Standard Tank and Seat, and Campbell Soup relocated. Followed by the professional classes and the once-busy downtown retail stores. All the while the city is bleeding middle-class and professional class residents to the newer, safer suburbs. Now it’s a “ward of the State” with no control over it’s schools of taxes…and it’s own police force was disbanded and it’s now patrolled by County-based outside-forces.

Camden City could have been leveled by an earthquake or flood and rebuilt from the ground up several times for what the Federal and NJ State governments have plowed endlessly into “redevelopment and stabilization” of Camden over the decades. It doesn’t work…

Time to level Detroit to the ground, relocate the few remaining residents to a few stabilized neighborhoods, and sell-off the Detroit Museum’s collection to pay-off the creditors.

  3. I have my doubts about the Mercatus state rankings.

For Oklahoma, they state that highway spending should be cut. Apparently, they don’t do much driving in OK nor am I sure what their beef is with KS.

Re Detroit: did the liberal Dems appear on the scene all by themselves? Or were they elected? If so, by whom. It we relocate the few (700,000) residents of Detroit at Ted suggests, is it possible that the problems will follow?

  4. You also have to note that Detroit has had a series of African-American mayors who were hostile to business, blamed white racism for all the cities problem, created massive city bureaucracies so they could hand out no-show jobs to political cronies while strangling the remaining enterprises in red tape, and treated themselves o lavish indulgences at taxpayer expense.

As long as we avoid that type of corrupt executive leadership at the national level, we should be all right.

  5. Thanks, VtK, I feel so much better about our national government now. ;-)

  8. Detroit has been going downhill ever since the 1967 race riots, which I vividly remember. George Romney was the governor. Henry Ford II and other notable citizens tried their best to get the city back on track, but obviously their efforts have been in vain

  9. Pittsburgh, one of the most liveable cities in America, has been run by Democrats since 1934. There is a difference, however. Guess what it is.

You’re related to Paula Dean, right? But that is fine. You have a good point.
