President Obama will not attend the Sochi Olympics, but to appease his wealthy gay liberal donors show the Russians how miffed he is with recent anti-gay statements and legislation, he is sending lesbian tennis player Billie Jean King (because tennis is such a huge Winter Olympic sport), lesbian hockey player Caitlin Cahow, and Janet Napolitano as part of the US Olympic delegation.
[Edit: Deleted a line about Obama hiding behind Bille Jean King’s pantsuit because it would have offended the easily offended.]
I love hockey, and amateur sports in general. But I lost interest in the Olympics a long time ago; one reason is because they have become so hyper-politicized; and the coverage doesn’t focus on the competition, it’s just one profile after another of an athlete overcoming something-or-other to compete at the games. Turning the U.S. Winter Olympic Team into an extension of the Obama Permanent Campaign and Minority Victims Perpetual Grievance Coalition just further politicizes sport; which is something we associate with totalitarian regimes, not a Constitutional Republic.
Not much skirt to hide behind on Billy Jean … Tennis outfits are a tad too small for such a big wuss.
But I do like this in the same way of Reagan sending South Africa a black man as ambassador.
Reagan appointing a black ambassador to South Africa was different; it was strictly in the political realm, and it was quite direct, not passive-aggressive.
I don’t know that I care much about this one. I don’t even think Russia is going to care (does anyone seriously think Obama sending a couple of lesbians to the Olympics is going to make Russia drop it’s anti gay stance?).
I love hockey-but with the Olympics in Russia I doubt I am getting up at 4:00am to watch hockey games.
The Russians have some damned good hockey players. I will be watching, one good thing about living in eastern Europe.
I know as a good American I should be rooting for team USA but I am leaning towards team Czech-mostly because I adore David Krejci.
Meh, Russia probably wouldn’t care too much about the lesbians.
It seems most of the anti-gay bigotry is directed toward gay men, which seems to indicate that perahps institutionalized homophobia is also institutionalized misandry.
@ #5
Krejci’s not bad, but I confess, I’m more of a Claude Giroux guy myself. The lovable jock personality, the goofy smile, the adorable Quebecois accent, the red hair… and the guy sure looks good in a suit. 🙂
I don’t normally fawn this much about a guy, but since we were comparing hockey crushes, I thought it appropriate to share. Anybody else care to join in the fun? 🙂
I’m curious to see how many milliseconds of airtime the Russian TV coverage gives to whatever “gay delegates” we send over. (Hardly any Russians will be watching the coverage by MSNBC, for the simple and obvious reason that very few of them understand spoken English well enough to follow the fast pace of live sports commentary.)
So not only is it a lame gesture, it’s a gesture that Russians won’t even notice. Take that, Putin!
As for cute hockey players, I thought Todd Harvey in his prime with San Jose Sharks was a fine looking man. Tyler Seguin is a good looking dude/ hot mess. Darren Helm of the Red Wings is definitely someone you wouldn’t kick out of bed for eating crackers.
Helm’s a cutie, V. Especially with some scruff. Kinda like a Malibu surfer got transplanted to Canada. But alas, I’m a Flyers fan, so I must be faithful to my beloved Claude. Can’t very well have a thing for the enemy, no can I!
I wasn’t aware you, pardon the cliche, play for our team, V. Would explain why Gay Patriot’s kinda turned into “V the K Hour” recently. That and the rapier wit. I swear, there must be some sort of caustic wit gene that always gets expressed along with homosexuality!
I didn’t intend to take over the blog, but it is nice to have fresh content every day, isn’t it?
I have about 20 hockey jerseys in my closet, some of them game-worn.
Well, presumably many people in Russia’s LGBT minority — which is to say, “the choir” — will make a point of going to YouTube, etc., in order to catch any pro-gay Olympics coverage produced by MSNBC and other Western media outlets. But hardly anyone else in Russia will bother, I would think.
It’s also possible that Russian TV will run a few translated clips of Greg Louganis or Billie Jean King yakking away, or show footage of spectators wearing rainbow-flag shirts and whatnot — but, obviously, the Russian producers will be perfectly free to edit these clips however they wish, and thereby add their own editorial spin to whatever Gey-Solidarnost!!! script that the American producers try to present.
Shamelessly stolen from Legal Insurrection’s blogroll:
Did Putin Outsmart Ukraine’s Protesters
The relevant quote: “Putin will indeed have “outfoxed” the West again, and the American Olympic delegation will seem a futile consolation prize for Washington.”
Vladimir Putin is so much smarter than Obama it isn’t even funny.
@ V the K
I don’t mind at all, V. Your content is always interesting, and it fulfills the purpose of a gay man sticking it to the liberal gay establishment.
It’s strange to me that everybody acts like Putin is an idiot. Why, is it because he’s Russian, or that he’s ex-KGB? Sure, there were thugs in the KGB, but Putin wasn’t throwing punches, he was calling the shots. You didn’t make it in the KGB unless you were smart as hell or listened to the guys who were.
There are few people as dangerous as a Russian Head of State with iron resolve and a brilliant mind.
Virtually everyone on the world stage is so much smarter than Obama it isn’t even funny.
The SCOAMF is glib, which too many people (including a few here) confuse with being smart.
The two are not synonymous.
There are few people as dangerous as a Russian Head of State with iron resolve and a brilliant mind.
Even more dangerous: An American head-of-state whose ego far exceeds his talents, acting on his whims with zero accountability.
@ #17
Put them together, and what do you got? Hint: it sure isn’t bibbidi bobbidi boo, I can tell you that much.
Putin is not an idiot and he has out maneuvered and run circles around Obama.
#8 I like Giroux a lot too-but he wears the wrong sweater (he is probably my favorite non Bruin though).
