Lousiana Senate Seatwarmer Mary Landrieu was already looking kinda vulnerable in 2014 because of her support for Obamacare. Now, a controversy has blown up in her backyard that squarely divides the conservative, religious voters she needs to win from the deep-pocketed liberals she needs to win.
RedState conjectures that this may tip the balance in favor of her challenger (Republican Bill Cassidy).
Over 90% of evangelicals support Phil Robertson, and agree with his views, as do most Republicans and conservatives. The Robertsons are a LOUISIANA-based family and business, and wildly popular in the state.
Do not expect anyone in the media to ask Ms. Landrieu to weigh in on the controversy; only Republican candidates are ever asked their opinions on difficult and divisive issues. e.g. Abortion-Rape.
One has to wonder if anyone will remember this thing ten months from now; much as everyone outside the Beltway has forgotten the partial Government shutdown.
Y’know, if the GOP had an actual strategy, they wouldn’t have to rely on dumb luck and Democrat screw-ups to win elections.
The Republicans are basically content to play Musical Chairs so long as they get to stay in the game.
They could start the ad with someone sternly warning: “Don’t hit the girl!” Then they could go right into, “But the girl is a Senator and she is doing a lousy job.”
Instead, the GOP will try to play nice and get smeared with trying to hit the girl.
Personally, I’d rather we just campaign against Obamacare, even in red states. I like Phil Robertson and am a big DD fan, but defending his comments sounds like a much worse use of campaign time than pointing out how utterly garbage Obamacare is. Defending his freedom to say what he believes is one thing, but I worry that Republicans will imply if not state that they somehow agree with what he said. I don’t want us talking about how vaginas are better than anuses. I’d rather talk about the people who lost their insurance. I’m all for keeping America a place where people can express unpopular opinions without fear, inasmuch as that’s possible. But I think a lot of older conservatives I know do not know the full extent of just how different younger voters are (incl. young conservatives and young Christians) on this issue. It’s not 2004 anymore. The real enemy of America isn’t gay marriage but a bloated, corrupt big government, epitomized by Obamacare.
Deep pockets from the radical left might put up a so-called Republican challenger to Bill Cassidy forcing him to use his warchest to win the Republican nomination, but with limited resources to defeat the incumbent in the general election.
