Seems some members of the “keep the Government out of my bedroom” party got their knickers in a wad because some celebrities were using e-cigarettes at the Golden Globes. E-cigarettes are widely regarded as harmless, but these senators thought they evoked the specter of Demon Tobacco.
We are troubled that these images glamorize smoking and serve as celebrity endorsements that could encourage young fans to begin smoking traditional cigarettes.
So, smoking is bad, right? Well, no. Smoking tobacco is bad. But smoking marijuana, as evidenced by the push to legalize it, is good.
I don’t have a dog in this fight; I prefer not to draw smoke of any form into my lungs. I am just shaking my head at the absence of intellectual consistency. How can one form of ingesting smoke be the embodiment of all that is evil, but ingesting the other is an individual choice that is none of the Government’s business?
For that matter, why is prohibition and social pressure necessary to keep teens from smoking and drinking alcohol; but teenagers should be encouraged to have sex “safely” because prohibition and social pressure won’t work?
Maybe the theory is that marijuana will be a helpful tool in keeping the masses pacified. Mary Jane and television are just the modern form of bread and circuses. That certainly worked out well for Rome… in the long haul.
