If President Obama had Wielded “Soft Power” at Home…

Do we all agree that, notwithstanding his penchant for distant murder-by-disembodied-aerial-vehicle, not-as-surgical-as-you’d-wish-it-were, drone strikes (what I like to call a “passive-aggressive” military policy), the president’s favored foreign policy is a preference for ‘soft power’? Which is to say, don’t you think the Obama Administration’s approach to the world is to rely more on influence than on coercion? I think he (and Secretary of State John Kerry too) would say so himself. He’d much prefer (well, either of them would, I suppose) to rely on what he considers (ahem) his extraordinarily outsized powers of charm and persuasion to win over other heads of state, rather than the inelegant and clumsy use of force to dictate his way when it comes to what other countries do.

Contrast that with his approach to the issues with America’s healthcare system.

Although I disagree with the premise (a topic for another post altogether), President Obama and the Leftist technocrats with whom he finds common cause believe in the scheme of health “insurance” and feel the third-party payment system is good because healthcare (which for some reason they feel is synonymous with health insurance) is “different” and thus not to be entrusted to market forces…then again, the things in life that should be influenced by market forces is pretty limited anyway.

Anyway. From their perspective, the answer has always been that not enough of the ‘young invincibles’ were bought into the cockamamie scheme and thus not participating, pushing the cost up due to what’s called ‘adverse selection’. Not enough people willing to pay more into a system and voluntarily get less out means that the whole thing collapses under the weight of those who are taking more than they’re putting in. It’s not even economics…it’s basic physics.

Their answer to this was (and is) that more people need to abandon their own better judgment and personal motivations and jump right in. But how to achieve that?

Well, with a super-majority in the Senate and an overwhelming majority in the House in 2009 those who know better than you pushed through the ACA without a single Republican vote in either chamber. For your own good, they forced an unpopular (at the time, and downright detested now) gigantic overhaul of an enormous chunk of our economy. Let’s call that “hard power”.

Of course, we see what hath the ACA wrought: With higher premiums than before for young and healthy individuals, those needed to save the sinking ship are now even less inclined to climb aboard. So now the very solution to the problem (as the health-insurance-scheme supporters see it) is even farther out of grasp.

This struck me as ironic because now the president and his lickspittle sycophants in the press/Leftist Hollywood/sports/entertainment/etc. are reduced to begging, pleading, brow-beating, heavy-handedly imploring every 20-something to please, please, please sign up for health “insurance” through the exchange, lest the signature program of your benighted leader fall to pieces and all we’ve worked for (WE!, not me, this is about YOU and how important all that work YOU! did on the campaign for…well, yes, me, but anyway…YOU! did to get…well, yes, me, but anyway…elected so I could serve YOU, because after all, YOU are the ones YOU’VE been waiting for, and thank goodness I came along to make YOU feel special about needing ME…oh, I mean ‘me’, but anyway….) tragically succumb to the machinations of the awful powers of cynicism and the Koch brothers and Rush Limbaugh and the War on Women, and…okay, where was I going with this? Oh, right. Please sign up for health insurance and talk about it in your pajamas with your friends at your kegger parties…

The president is in an all-out campaign to get the least-likely people to sign up for health “insurance” to…sign up for health “insurance”. But if he’d done that when he was popular (and his ACA handn’t ironically increased the price of it), couldn’t he have avoided all this?

Consider: when he was elected, Barack Obama had an incredible amount of popularity and political capital (before his inauguration, his approval rating was 79%). With that, he had the power to influence and persuade. Let’s call that “soft power”. What’s ironic is that, had he chosen to use his soft power (and been successful), he may have been able to convince a ton of the 20-something sheep who voted for CHANGE! and HOPE! to actually do things (even things against their own better interest) through the influence of this “soft power”. Who knows? It may have actually kept the system afloat.

*(No, The system still would have eventually collapsed, of course, because the problem wasn’t ever that young people weren’t buying “insurance”, rather the dis-incentive for consumers to shop for, and for providers to offer prices commensurate with their actual value…well, you know how that story goes…)

This suave and persuasive dude who had just sailed into the Oval Office because he was too cool for the room and was able to exercise the lost art of subtlety was loved by damned-near everybody in the Country. He believed in The System. He realized (believed) that the problem with it was that not enough people were active participants in it. His solution? Heavy-handedly and by force, to coerce everybody into doing what he wanted them to do.

Way to go, Cowboy!

Left-Wing Radio Collective Demonstrates Why Leftists Should Not Be Allowed to Run Anything

Left-Wing Pacifica Radio Network* is collapsing in a heap of drama, mismanagement, and financial incompetence. [Much like anything else that is run by doctrinaire leftists.] [*So far left they consider Obama a moderate centrist.]

First, the mismanagement and incompetence.

Pacifica has a long and storied history, and still features such leading liberals as Amy Goodman, the widely known host of Democracy Now! (on which journalists Glenn Greenwald and Jeremy Scahill are frequent guests), but it has fallen on hard times of late. Listenership, according Reese, is “extraordinarily low.” During an average 15-minute period, just 700 people listen to its Los Angeles station, 90.7 FM KPFK, for at least five minutes, according to Nielsen Audio, which monitors radio ratings.

Pacifica’s New York station, WBAI, is even worse off, with too few listeners to register on the Arbitron rankings, and is all but bankrupt. Last year, most of the staff was laid off, including the entire news department.

Making matters worse, the federal government, via the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, is withholding Pacifica’s grant money, thanks to the network’s “failure to provide documentation” for a 2012 audit.

Then, the drama.

Hypocrisy, the Democrats Are You

The Senior Citizen Senator from California once again makes the case for selling the place back to Mexico.

2-faced-feinstein

She is also, once again, pushing to deprive law-abiding citizens of the right to own the very same weapons the Obama Regime was supplying to Mexican Drug Gangs.

The Left Continues to be Insane

Yeah, they really believe this garbage.

We want to cut taxes’ … is a whole lot more abstract than, ‘N-gg-r, n-gg-r.’ ” It continues to be more abstract, and it continues to work.

Update: And lest anyone say, “Oh, that’s just one person’s opinion from an obscure left-wing website,” we note that the mainstream left website Salon is making the exact same argument.

Update: Source quote used the n-word in its entirety. This has been edited here.

How the wheel turns!

We’ve gone from liberals who’d make fun of former GOP standard-bearer Mitt Romney (on Russia), to…well…Russians openly mocking President Obama.

Now being remembered, a typical example of liberals who made fun of Romney:

Arianna Huffington
@ariannahuff

So I guess if Romney is elected we can get ready for a new cold war with Russia.

Romney got in his (well-justified) “I told you so” last weekend:

Why, across the world, are America’s hands so tied?

A large part of the answer is our leader’s terrible timing. In virtually every foreign-affairs crisis we have faced these past five years, there was a point when America had good choices and good options. There was a juncture when America had the potential to influence events. But we failed to act at the propitious point; that moment having passed, we were left without acceptable options….

Meanwhile, Obama’s sanctions on a few individual Russians, and calls to try to make their stock market go down and stuff, have provoked their contempt:

“The US and EU sanctions against Russia are absurd and unreal,” State Duma Foreign Affairs Committee Deputy Chairman Alexander Romanovich told Itar-Tass…“This is an operetta, and we can only laugh…”

Ordinary Russians are none too impressed, either.

UPDATE: Russia and China drawing closer together. “The worse Russia’s relations are with the West, the closer Russia will want to be to China. If China supports you, no one can say you’re isolated.” It’s just like Obama, to not get that.

More leftists run amok

After V’s posts on the progressive, feminist lesbian who stands with the religion that actually oppresses women, and the transsexual who feels that her sex change operation should get her off the hook for murder, I thought I’d throw in a couple more examples.

1) In Michigan, a teachers’ union contract openly discriminates against men, whites, and Christians. From the Ferndale school district’s clause about promotions:

Special consideration shall be given to women and/or minority defined as: Native American, Asian American, Latino, African American and those of the non-Christian faith.

I could note the poor construction, and the apparent ignorance of the fact that many Latinos are part of what progressives would call “white privilege”. But what’s far more disturbing is that teachers – or, a school district – could be so disrespectful of basic American legal, civic and moral principles.

2) There’s more on that bossy left-wing professor who assaulted a pro-life, 16 year old girl last week in Santa Barbara. From the police report:

In essence, Miller-Young told me that she felt “triggered” by the images on the posters…

Miller-Young said that she and others began demanding that the images be taken down. Miller-Young said that the demonstrators refused. At which point, Miller-Young said that she “just grabbed it [the sign] from this girl’s hands.” Asked if there had been a struggle, Miller-Young stated, “I’m stronger so I was able to take the poster.”…

Miller-Young went on to say that because the poster was upsetting…she felt that the [pro-life] activists did not have the right to be there…

I told Miller-Young that I appreciated the fact that she felt traumatized by the [pro-life] imagery but that her response constituted a violation of law…

Miller-Young replied that [the pro-lifers] coming to campus and showing “graphic imagery” [in common areas] was insensitive to the community…

Miller-Young also suggested that the group had violated her rights. I asked Miller-Young what right the group had violated. Miller-Young responded, “My personal right to go to work and not be in harm.”

Miller-Young elaborated that one of the reasons she had felt so alarmed by this imagery is because she is about to have the test for Down Syndrome. Miller-Young said. “I work here, why do they get to intervene in that?”

I explained to Miller-Young that vandalism, battery and robbery had occurred…

Get it? Mireille Miller-Young wants to get off the hook for alleged acts of vandalism, battery and robbery because *her feelers were hurt*.

Miller-Young could potentially have a Down Syndrome baby that she might then want to abort, and how dare anyone take (or publicize) any stance that might make her feel guilt over that? Telling Miller-Young your truth (remember when lefties used to love the idea of everyone ‘telling their truth’?) is now “harm” to her that justifies her use of physical violence.

This looks to me like a classic case of a woman who might have a personality disorder, seeking to control/abuse other people. God bless the sane policeman!

Now for some better items. The Delaware Supreme Court has upheld self-protection rights for residents of public housing. And they were unanimous. Remember, the criminal residents already had guns, so this ruling is a help to the law-abiding residents.

And in California, three Asian-American State senators thankfully blocked an effort to bring back racial discrimination in college admissions, after California voters had rejected it in 1996.
