Teachers Unions/Bureaucrats Team Up to Punish Dissident Students

Unionized Teachers in Pennsylvania are refusing to write college recommendation letters for students on account of a contract dispute with the District’s School Board.

And in New York, kids who opt out of Common Core testing are being forced to sit at their desks and do nothing for hours on end while other students, more obedient to the edicts of the great and bountiful state, take their mandated tests in “friendly numbers” math and “rewrite the Bill of Rights” civics.

Funny, isn’t it? How public schools will bend over backwards to accommodate Mohammedans and Transgendereds; but a few kids opting out of Common Core? Forget about it.

Just how gullible are the American people?

…I suppose in a nation that twice elected this schiester as president, the question answers itself to a degree.

But consider this: All winter, government spokespersons wondered, in puzzled bewilderment given the complexity and enormity of the entire enterprise of doing something that hundreds of private corporations do thousands of times daily with the ease of a bodily function, just how many people had actually so far at any point in time signed up for insurance under the ACA’s myriad state health insurance exchanges. For months on end, Secretary Sebelius and her minions, White House spokes-individual Jay Carney, even the president himself were left in befuddled speechless deer-in-the-headlights slack-jawedness over a simple question: How many people have signed up?

Nary a straight answer because…well, that sort of information is just so darned hard to come up with.

Lo! And Behold! The very day THE VERY DAY! the ball drops and all who are to receive insurance (and who haven’t fallen into about 15,832 ‘exemptions’ magically bestowed upon the populace by the benevolent dictator and his czars) must have signed up, suddenly the Administration appears from behind a magic curtain to announce that 7,100,000 subjects citizens have indeed signed up for insurance. (Precisely ‘point-one’ more than their goal!)

Suddenly those impossibe-to-know numbers are well…right there at the fingertips of the president himself. Amazing, isn’t it, how reliable and precise are the Administrative Class?

Naturally we have an adversarial press, who after six months of having been given the Heisman Stiff Arm on their queries about numbers, will raise the flag on this fascinating turnaround. Right?

Progressive Left Race Conference Encourages White People to Hate Themselves

Last weekend, while most of us were going on about our business, something called the “White Privilege Conference” was taking place in Madison, Wisconsin.

Built on the premise that “the U.S. was started by white people, for white people”, the conference boasts a long list of radical partner organizations, including Code Pink, The Social Justice Training Institute, and Hip Hop Congress, whose co-founder, Shamako Noble, has collaborated on projects with Public Allies, an organization whose Chicago branch was first led by Michelle Obama.

But what exactly is ‘white privilege’?

According to some of the speakers and conference goers in this video, ‘white privilege’ is a “transparent preference for whiteness that saturates our society,” and if you are white, it means “there is a whole part of you that you are not naming and you’re not understanding because whiteness is just normalized and it’s just there…”.

Long story short: It was an opportunity for white people who already hate themselves to be lectured that they deserve to hate themselves, and need to teach other white people to hate themselves.

One “educator” was moved to denounce herself, for not hating her own whiteness enough. (But also mostly, to claim, she was still morally superior to white people who don’t hate their whiteness yet).

“I have to everyday wake up and acknowledge that I am so deeply imbedded with racist thoughts and notions and actions in my body that I have to choose everyday to do anti-racist work and think in an anti-racist way.”

She argued that until white people admit they have a problem, they will not be able to fight against white privilege.

“We’ve been raised to be good. ‘I’m a good white person,’ and yet to realize I carry within me these dark, horrible thoughts and perceptions is hard to admit. And yet like the alcoholic, what’s the first step? Admitting you have a problem,”

This exercise in progressive left vanity and self-flagellation was supported by taxpayer dollars.

Texas A&M to Give Special Gay and Transgendered Snowflakes Their Very Own Super Special Graduation Ceremony

Because Texas A&M wants to give extra-special recognition for the amazing achievement of being gay or confused about gender identity.

With the spring semester winding down, Texas A&M is set to host its inaugural “Lavender Graduation” celebrating the commencement of its LGBT students.

The mid-April event is sponsored by the university’s GLBT Resource Center which falls within the university’s Offices of the Dean of Student Life. According to its website, the resource center is “dedicated to providing a safe and affirming location on campus for all students regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity or expression.”

Because it just isn’t enough to just accept people’s gayness, you have to celebrate it, dammit! Celebrate it at every opportunity. And if you don’t celebrate gayness every moment of every day, then you obviously hate gay people and want them to suffer and be miserable.

And This Is Why I Call Them Dramacrats

Failed VP Candidate and Emphatic Amnesty Supporter Congressman Paul Ryan released a budget blueprint today that contains some very modest entitlement reforms and mild reductions in the rate of spending growth. Not nearly enough to deal with the unsustainable spending and expansion of the Federal behemoth. Seriously, it’s like decreasing the speed of the Titanic by half a knot, or a couple with massive credit card debt and an underwater mortgage deciding to buy a Lexus instead of a Bentley.

The Democrats responded to this budget proposal the way Lindsay Lohan responds to the phrase, “Ma’am, you’ve had enough, and I think someone should take you home.”

“This reckless Republican budget casts a dark shadow over the American Dream. By gutting vital investments in our future, it is a direct attack on job creation and a recipe for our nation’s economic decline.”

Earthquakes, volcanoes, the dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together… mass hysteria! The Senate Majority Leader rambled incoherently about the budget creating something called a “Kochtopia.”

And, everyone knows how this Kabuki play ends. Both sides agree to spend more, and both walk away pretending they aren’t totally satisfied with the outcome.

Speaking of Drama Queens, the Diva-in-Chief of the Dramacrat Party accused people opposed to the Obamacare debacle of being “mad about the idea of folks having health insurance?

It is beyond sad that 51% of the electorate is stupid enough to believe this garbage.

Update: Oh, and a Democrat Representative in Missouri called a Republican a Nazi for introducing a bill that would let employees opt out of Union dues.

And suddenly, HFT

I never knew that Casey Kasem was the voice of Shaggy. But I digress.

CBS recently did a good piece on High Frequency Trading (HFT), a means by which well-connected computers churn the stock markets and skim the cream. 15 minutes, here it is:

But a few things are odd about HFT as a story, or at least noteworthy.

First: the curious absence of government involvement. HFT has been going on for years (Zero Hedge started blogging it in 2009). Where have the vaunted government regulators been, all this time? Answer: Nowhere (until right now, as we’ll discuss in a minute).

The CBS piece praises Brad Katsuyama, a trader who figured out years ago how HFT works and founded a new exchange, IEX, to try to defeat HFT. That’s a great example of private enterprise being ahead of the regulators.

In fact, private enterprise has run circles around the regulators; first by creating HFT, then by being years ahead of government in working to defeat HFT. Could it be that government regulation isn’t effective? (cough)

The mainstream media’s absence from the HFT story until now (2014) is also striking. And that brings us to the second oddity: the timing of the CBS story. As if by magic, within days of its airing, we have also had announcements that the FBI will finally probe HFT. And that Goldman-Sachs will back IEX, the new HFT-free exchange. (Update: And the pr0n-watching SEC finally, also, investigating.)

I’m old enough to recognize a co-ordinated campaign. Granting that HFT is a real story, I still must speculate that the reason why HFT is suddenly on our collective lips, under investigation, etc., is because somebody powerful finds it convenient, at this time. (Where in the previous five years, they didn’t find it convenient.)

Who is that somebody? I don’t know. I did just note that Goldman-Sachs is rolling with the punches, at least. Over at Zero Hedge, they speculate that HFT is now being set up as the scapegoat for a coming stock market bubble-crash. The Federal Reserve is (by its QE, ZIRP and many other policies) the biggest market-rigger of all. The Fed has engineered the stock market bubble of the last five years. And, when that bubble bursts eventually, the Fed will want us all to blame something or someone else.

UPDATE: On CNBC, Katsuyama and a (truly obnoxious) pro-HFT guy get down-n-dirty. Good times.

This is who leads us

Janet Yellen, who is President Obama’s new chair of the Federal Reserve Bank (Politburo that plans our economy), and who is thus the most powerful woman in the world, gave a speech yesterday where she bemoaned the fact that inflation isn’t high enough (in her view).

To humanize her speech, she told about three people who are long-term unemployed. If only there were enough inflation for these poor people to find jobs. It’s Yellen’s noble job to manipulate the economy until they can. But guess what? Two of the three have criminal records. Might that have anything to do with their unemployment?

One was Dorine Poole, who lost her job processing medical insurance claims when the recession hit.

“When employers started hiring again, two years of unemployment became a disqualification,” Yellen said in her speech yesterday to a community development conference in Chicago. “Even those needing her skills and employment preferred less-qualified workers without a long spell of unemployment.”

Poole was convicted of felony theft 20 years ago after she fell in with a “bad circle,” she said in a telephone interview…

Jermaine Brownlee, a skilled construction worker and apprentice plumber, “saw his wages drop sharply as he scrambled for odd jobs and temporary work,” Yellen said.

Brownlee said in a telephone interview that he was convicted of possession of heroin last year and currently is on parole.

OK, so was Yellen just caught by surprise? Did her speechwriter goof? Nope:

Yellen met personally with both people and knew about their records before the speech.

So basically, the most important person in our economy is determined to create inflation until she sees even the least employable people of all – namely, convicted criminals – in demand as employees. “Fasten your seatbelts; it’s going to be a bumpy night.”

CAVEAT: Lest the excitable accuse me of being a doomsday theorist (gasp!), I shall duly warn that in no way am I predicting instant hyperinflation as of tomorrow morning. In fact, for now, Yellen has officially adopted a less-inflationary stance as she “tapers” the Fed’s recent inflation-creating efforts. I have said “for now” and “officially”, because I think it’s Kabuki theater. As the Taper progresses over the next several months, it will cause markets to drop – whereupon Yellen will revert to full inflation-creating mode (gladly, under political cover). The point here, about her speech, is that it tips her hand.
