Forty years ago, Mexico was a one-party dictatorship under the Partido Revolucionario Institucional, hobbled by slow growth, soaring inequality, endemic corruption and dead politics.
California is now a one-party state, with increased corruption and little to no willingness to reform its creaky, scarily unbalanced economy.
So, what has happened over the last forty years? Simple. California has been overrun with illegal immigrants who brought the corrupt, one-party culture of their former homeland with them, aided and abetted by hippy-dippy multi-cultralist liberals who urged them to retain that culture rather than assimilate. As a result, California became a one-party, quasi-socialist state.
This was not an accident, it was a test-run. Obama is now seeking to overrun the rest of the country with uneducated, third-world illegal immigrants who will inevitably become dependent on the welfare state. Inquisitive minds note a pattern here.
While Professor Kotkin’s diagnosis is correct, his solution — for the Republicans to become Tweedle Dum to the Democrats Tweedle Dee in order to be “competitive” … is no solution at all.
Until the Republicans develop some basic sense and offer a compelling social and economic message for an increasingly diverse state, they will remain bit players.
When Republicans “offer a compelling social and economic message” to reach out to diversity voters, what you get is Thad Cochran telling minorities to vote for him because he’ll keep the welfare gravy train coming.
