Democrat Blames Election Loss on Gay Marriage

August 31, 2014 by V the K

He claims evil Republicans hate Teh Gheys so much they all voted in his primary to get rid of him because hate.

Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie said he lost his bid for re-election in a Democratic primary because of his decision to call a special session to legalize gay marriage.

Republicans are allowed to vote for Democrats in Hawaii’s open primary, and Abercrombie said they chose to vote against him because of his support for gay marriage and because they think his party rival, state Sen. David Ige, is an easier target to beat in the general election.

Thad Cochran could not be awakened for comment.

(*ACTUALLY*) I love everyone in our country [or out of it] that understand what the Founders found in the documents preceding to — as well as the Constitution itself is something the world has never seen and SHOULD see, is whom I roll with.

I’m STILL trying to get the Ohio GOP to close primaries to only registered Republicans, who were registered 90 days (same as residency requirements) before the primary.

    I like the NH method.

If you are registered as a republican you can only get a relublican primary ballot. If you are registered democrat you can only get the democrat primary ballot. If you are an independent you can choose your ballot.

When you choose a primary ballot you are registering for that party and have to redecorated as an independent within 6 weeks of the next primary. They have a table where you can do this on the way out of the polling place.

Party loyalists shouldn’t be able to screw another party’s primary but there are real independents who I think should get some say in who their political leaders are.

I think primaries should be closed. Otherwise, why have political parties? (Not that I think that highly of them, but they mostly seem to make some sort of institutional sense.)

Abercrombe has a loose cannon for a mouth. Ige is a native Hawaiian of Japanese descent. The precincts went 31.5% for Abercrombie and 67.4% for Ige. Abercrombie outspent the Ige 10 to 1. ($4.9 million to $447,000.)

David Ige said that he offered an alternative for voters who are unhappy with Abercrombie’s proposal last year to raise several taxes, as well as his political style. Ige promised in a campaign flier that:

“there will be no name-calling when I disagree with anyone, no disparaging remarks toward anyone, no taking sole credit for collective achievements or blaming others when things go wrong.”

So, things went “wrong” for Abercrombie and he immediately blamed cross-over voting and homophobes for his defeat.

At the heart of the loss is this: the betrayal of the late Senator Daniel Inouye. Inouye was a beloved native Hawaiian who asked Abercrombie to name native Hawaiian Colleen Hanabusa to succeed him. Instead, with input from the Obama machine, Abercrombie named his Lt. Governor Brian Schatz to the Senate. That offended the multitude of voters who loved Inouye.

Senator Schatz was in the primary for renomination. But Hanabusa challenged him for the nomination. The primary between Schatz and Hanabusa resulted in Hannabusa conceding the primary election to Schatz, who won by a margin of 1,769 votes. Hanabusa conceded with this statement:

“I ask former colleagues and friends in the Hawaii State Legislature to explore what is necessary to ensure the people that their vote truly counts. I heard from many who feel strongly that they were disenfranchised from the voting process this election and I stand ready to support any collaborative effort to have those voices heard.”

Schatz will win the Senate election handily and keep his seat. The last year a Republican was a Senator from Hawaii was 1970. Schatz painted Hanabusa as a “corporate Democrat who voted to cut Social Security.”

Neil Abercrombie lost because he offended the voters one time too many. He was, in fact, scrubbed. Hanabusa barely lost to a sitting Senator.

The Constitution of Hawaii sets up the semi-autonomous Office of Hawaiian Affairs: “The constitution states, “The Office of Hawaiian Affairs shall hold title to all the real and personal property now or hereafter set aside or conveyed to it which shall be held in trust for native Hawaiians and Hawaiians.”

In clearer terms, the state is hexed with a form on double citizenship depending upon whether the citizen is a native Hawaiian or just a plain old Hawaiian.

Senator Inouye was confounded with whether “native Hawaiians” became “native Americans” when Hawaii became a state. He worked diligently to keep the issue from making its way to the Supreme Court.

Hawaii has active advocates for Hawaiian sovereignty and/or succession. Neil Abercrombie stepped on a lot of toes among these activists, sympathizers and compromisers.

I stopped at a “native Hawaiian beach” on Kauai. It was posted as a state beach, but the succession flag was flying and a native Hawaiian immediately greeted me as a “guest.” He asked that I preserve the nature and enjoy the time there. The very detailed temporary sign board spelled out the terms of respecting “native Hawaiian beach” in very kind and welcoming words. There are some feelings in Hawaii that run very deep.
