Liberals Really Are Less Patriotic than Conservatives

The left has been in a lather because Rudy Giuliani stated that a President who refused to wear an American Flag lapel pin while campaigning, grabbed his crotch during the pledge of allegiance, vowed to ‘fundamentally transform’ America, has apologized abroad for America’s “arrogance,” has said that American “exceptionalism” is no more real than Greek exceptionalism, and who has systematically undermined the economic and international standing of the United States through his policies… does not really love his country in the sense that the term “love of country” is generally understood.

The left gets pretty defensive when their patriotism is questioned, but the truth is, holding contempt for everything America is supposed to stand for (free enterprise, individual rights, freedom of religion) is a pretty unpatriotic belief system. The data back this up.

A Pew Research survey last year found that 46 percent of “steadfast conservatives” believed that the U.S. stands above all other countries; only 11 percent of “solid liberals” believed the same. Seventy-two percent of steadfast conservatives said they often feel proud to be an American; only 40 percent of solid liberals said they do.

This is really not a shocker. Most conservatives have liberal friends, we went to college with liberals, we were taught by liberals in schools, and we get liberal messages from a media that is about 96% controlled by liberals. We have heard you guys tearing down America, expressing contempt for America, American History, American values. So, don’t even play this game where you get all haughty and offended when your patriotism is questioned. Liberace used to get just as offended when people suggested he wasn’t into women.

  1. The trouble is – and I’ve been meaning to do a post or two about this – that, because of the rule of the Left, America really has become less of a great and unusual country; or somewhat more of a Euro-socialist, corrupt, dangerous craphole.

Now that the federal government can mandate people into commercial relationships simply because they live and breathe (a.k.a. Obamacare) and plan the economy, while 43% of Democrats positively desire an Obama dictatorship, I have doubts about whether America should be classified as a free country. But the larger point is: the Left’s ability to self-fulfill its prophecies. The Left hated America and *wanted* to envision it as just another Euro-socialist, corrupt, dangerous craphole….and behold, they are making it so.

I love human freedom, more than any country. As far as America goes, I love the defender of human freedom that America was born to be, and could be and should be – but right now, isn’t.

  3. Jeff, I’m with you. I don’t consider myself a patriot any longer and don’t pretend otherwise. My comment is directed that the Left’s knee-jerk defense of their nonexistent patriotism.

  5. Living amongst the denizens of the Castro, I have sometimes run experiments where I praise America and then where I trash America, to see how the open-minded patriots of LGBTQ land respond. Only once in over ten years has it not turned out as predicted: America-bashing is praised and joined, America-praising or even defense is deprecated and attacked. It’s perfectly clear: the Left has only ever loved its idea of what America could be under their tender ministrations. As it actually has been, they have no use for it at all.

And now that they are poised to remain dominant forever, I grieve the passing away of my country.

  7. @ ILC: We have faced worse. Slavery was once the law of the land; it was once much en vogue to suggest that the mentally handicapped be castrated; heaping praise on Benito Mussolini and expressing admiration for Adolph Hitler were once acceptable activities.

The feeling that the present is worse than the past is nothing new; the likes of Plato looked back on the heroes of the Trojan War and said, “How far we’ve fallen.” History is one long defeat, a progressive accumulation of entropy as we slide from the glories of an ever-receding past towards the gloom of an uncertain future. In order to not climb a bell tower and start sniping people, we need to find the pony in all of the manure. I, for one, am rather glad that I don’t have to worry about contracting polio, and rather enjoy the internet. We must, in the words of the denizens of a certain corner of the internet, “Enjoy the decline.”

  10. @ ILC: What, the url for the site? Oh, that’s too easy. Start with that phrase and follow the rabbit hole. There’s a collection of interesting individuals who have basically given the middle finger to the prevailing political narrative and have set about smashing the narratives that both sides hold. I learned the truth about the gender pay-gap myth from them well in advance of the post on this site.

  15. In reading the comments and mulling things over a bit, I discover that patriotism is a fairly fleeting emotion. Obama was comfortable covering his groin during the pledge as the photo shows. I find that I have become comfortable mentally saluting the current POTUS with my upraised middle finger. Some would say I am racist and some would say I am “disrespectful to the office.” That second charge is a veiled implication that I am not patriotic. Furthermore, I would be willing to take my coffee can of money and depart to climes where I wasn’t consumed with troubles about where the USA is headed. It wouldn’t be “my” country and I could relax.

The “enjoy the decline” is a lovely sort of Star Wars bar scene approach by way of celebrating cynicism. However, Ambrose Bierce got there first in his Devil’s Dictionary:

“Patriotism, n. Combustible rubbish ready to the torch of any one ambitious to illuminate his name. In Dr. Johnson’s famous dictionary patriotism is defined as the last resort of a scoundrel. With all due respect to an enlightened but inferior lexicographer I beg to submit it is the first.”

I was in junior high school when “under God” was added to the pledge. I was decades old when I learned that the pledge was written by an employee of Youth’s Companion as part of a subscription campaign which had a patriotic and marketing campaign to sell American flags to every school in the country. They hooked onto the Columbus Day, the World’s Fair in Chicago (The Columbian Exposition) and the National Education Association.

Originally, kids gave the Bellamy salute of an outstretched raised arm with the palm of the hand facing down. It was taken from the old Roman salute. But Mussolini and Hitler came on the scene and the salute was changed to the hand covering the heart on December 22, 1942.

The symbolism of patriotism has been greatly manipulated over the years and taboos have come and gone.

My fully fledged gripe with Obama is his unwillingness to divulge the fundamentals of his program to fundamentally change America. At least Roosevelt took the time and effort to chat from the fireside about the fleecing of the sheeple.

It would be extremely difficult for me to face Obambi and pronounce: “I pledge allegiance to state and to the programs for which the state is the source, one nation, no exceptions, indivisible, with social justice and as much liberty as the state permits.” (“So help me, Obama.”)

Patriotism is a conception of what is noble about a nation. Once a nation sinks to the unexceptional level of mediocrity among nations, the next best substitute for patriotism seems to be ideology for a particular cause or two. At that point, all the fuss and feathers of liberalism become the highest form of patriotism on the horizon. You know, liberté, égalité, fraternité and a chicken in every pot.

  18. We have hard so much from the liberals that wwe know where they stand, so we have every reason to ignore them. Why I don’t get are conservatives or seeming conservative defending Obama as a patriot , and his love for the country is unquestionable. Really? He has never missed an opportunity to denigrate the U.S., whether in front of the UN Assembly or on his many junkets overseas. Then there is his total lack of regard for the Constitution, while he execises an imperial presidency. What comes out of his mouth is more like Rev. Wright and Al Sharpton, than the Founding Fathers. Rudy is right and deserves our support. He is the patriot, not Obama.

    Comment by Roberto — February 25, 2015 @ 11:11 am - February 25, 2015

  19. @ Heliotrope: Some people certainly do go about “enjoying the decline” in a thoroughly cynical manner. I try to be a bit less cynical and ironic about it. Sure, the economy is kinda crappy, the populace becomes ever more comfortable with the notion of an all-seeing, all-powerful nanny-police state… but at least I don’t have to worry about ending up on the receiving end of a Visigoth blade, contracting bubonic plague, getting offed for having the “wrong” opinion of the pope’s authority, or being strung up with piano wire for propositioning another man. We don’t get to pick when we live, we just have to roll with the punches and enjoy the comforts that our own time affords us.

Personally, I am more partial to national ideals than any actual nation. If the United States completely ceases to embrace the principles that it was founded on, I would leave… the problem is, what country embraces those ideals more fully than we do?

  24. Sean L: Agreed.

The great problem lies in having ingested the higher understanding of the greatness of our constitutional republic which has managed our popular sovereignty so extraordinarily well.

A person may be able to blend in with a less enlightened public in, say, Ecuador, but it is impossible to erase the presumptions of popular sovereignty from your memory. That is why malcontent dreamers always seen to flock to an island for sanctuary.

There is a real need for thinking people to understand what Jonathan Swift was telling us about how we order ourselves when self-preservation is class competitive. The age of “enlightenment” wrote down the questions. We still don’t have the answers.

Why Ecuador? Rafael Correa is a Chavez “wannabe.” There is no freedom of expression, particularly for the media. Ecuador, along with Bolivia, are charter members of Chavez’s ALBA (Alianza Bolivariano para Las Americas). Chile would be the better bet. They have elected presidents from both the right and the left. The left is not so radical. Economically the most advanced in Latin America, because of the “Chicago Boys,” students of Milton Freeman when they attended the University of Chicago. Many have investment accounts in lieu of social security. Prior to the 2008 bubble burst, they averaged earnings of 10% per annum. Even the left praises the idea and has no intentions of eliminating it. In the early years when GW was trying to sell the idea, he had a perfect model to use which he missed.

If El Salvador weren’t so violent with gangs and a left government that is anxious to align with Venezuela, I could recommend it. The two things that I admire is its Constitution. The First Article states that the nation recognizes that life begins at birth and the fetus is a human being with all the rights and protection under the law. The other thing I admire is the openess about religion, stores have a statue or a picture of the store’s patron saint, not only small businesses but large supermarkets and department stores. At Christmas there are Nativity scenes everywhere, public plazas, parks and front lawns of factories. It would drive ACLU nuts. The left makes a pretense at religion attending services particularly now during the election campaign. This Sunday is election day for mayors and legislators.
