Some people scoffed at Ben Shapiro when he said that gay activists would be targeting religious schools next. That was less than a week ago.
It didn’t take long.
Students and alumni of a Catholic high school in Iowa held a rally on Wednesday afternoon to protest a decision by school officials not to hire a gay teacher.
The rally at Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines involved a walkout and a demonstration at which a handful of students and alumni spoke, reports The Des Moines Register.
There’s a simple solution to this. The gay dude, if he’s a good teacher, can find work someplace where his lifestyle isn’t an issue. And the school can hire someone who maybe isn’t as good a teacher, but who lives within the strictures of Catholic teaching. And everybody else minds their own damn business.
But that would deny a lot of LGBT’s and their progressive allies the opportunity to sanctimoniously posture, and to force their morals and values on people who don’t agree with them.
This nugget taken from the Daily Caller story in the link changes the narrative entirely.
The issue is not the gay teacher who successfully performed as a substitute, but his impending same-sex marriage.
We do not know for certain if the “vetting” stopped at the “discovery” of “gay” or if it came to a dead end over having a role model in violation of fundamental Catholic strictures. It would appear that the applicant is not interested in being same-sex celibate. The Catholic doctrine for gays is the very definition of celibate: abstaining from marriage and sexual relations, typically for religious reasons.
Furthermore, said applicant can not be ignorant of the rules in the realm of the seat of Catholicism. That is an impossible argument to make, because it makes him too dumb to be an adequate teacher.
Here I turn to Timothy who put the issue of teaching in a Catholic school in very understandable terms, whether you are male or female:
The reader of this comment may take exception to the beliefs of Catholic church, but that means the reader must decide for himself just what he can and will do about those beliefs. Prudence would suggest that accepting their fact in the reality of the Catholic face is the easiest solution which also permits the person to move on. It is a form of tolerance.
When it came to the cake debate, someone on here argued that it was wrong to force a business to take a gay wedding job, because a marriage involves an “action.”
That argument doesn’t seem to apply here.
CCP –
In the church, the expectations of those in positions of authority and teaching are higher than for anyone else. Certainly they have failed in spectacular fashion on (many recent) occassion, but expecting teachers to be living a life in keeping with the church’s stated beliefs is not bigotry towards this man.
I believe this teacher may be totally awesome at his job.
I doubt it is impossible to find an equally awesome teacher who is willing to conform to Catholic teachings.
It is a private, church run school-they are in charge of the school and should be able to hire or fire teachers based on whether the conform to the teachings they desire.
Vince,
I don’t understand your use of “gay actions” at all.
The bakers would not bake a cake for a same-sex couple in celebration of their wedding.
The Catholic schools apparently said no to hiring a teacher who intends to be a partner in marriage in a same-sex wedding.
Both instances involve denying someone a service/job based on same-sex weddings being against the religious beliefs of the person asked to provide the service/job.
Either this is a form of illegal harassment or undue punishment or it is not. The 1st Amendment permits the existence of religious conscience. So, 42 U.S. Code § 1996a was written:
The US Congress does not have to pass a law making same-sex wedding cakes lawful. You can buy them hither and yon or bake your own or doll up something boxed and frozen by Pepperidge Farm.
No police entity is going to confiscate your same-sex wedding cake.
What is at issue here is whether a private commercial entity can refuse to “facilitate” a same-sex wedding. Does the religious belief system of the private provider cause the conscience of the private provider to refuse to provide the service?
In the case of the Catholic Church, does the employer have to hire a role model who is in open conflict with the religious conscience of the institution?
Sandra Fluke, you will remember, was too incredibly dumb and stupid to understand that a Catholic University she attended was not in the free contraception business and also too dumb and stupid to walk a block to get free contraception outside of the grounds of the Catholic University. Oh, my.
The “Liberal” army of intolerance took up the sword and shield in the name of their brand of forced tolerance and took on Georgetown University for its Catholic doctrine concerning birth control. “Liberals” across the nation whooped and hollered like an Al Sharpton rent-a-mob in Ferguson with their own chants of about rubbers and a piece at Georgetown. Pelosi and her feral band of slobbering tinkerers even had the haplessly named Fluck come to Congress and weep with them.
This is about the purile left pissing on the Christian church and nothing more or less. It is a hissy-fit and the left threatens to scream and scream and scream until code pink turns blue.
That the government would be involved at all, even in theory, in the hiring practices of a private religious school shows the huge overreach that 95% of “Americans” have come to take for granted and indeed come to take for sacred. Every new “anti-discrimination” law and rule shrinks freedom, every time, and will continue to do so until we find ourselves living under a bizarre secularist sharia. A polity driven by the ideology of equality must become a police state.
I think my solution is the optimal one; let businesses and individuals make decisions for themselves without the intrusion of the state.
It appears that the Supreme Court benchmark of “a compelling state interest” is seen as a “nosey state interest” by the executive and legislative branches.
One of Obama’s greatest successes has been in installing rule by the regulatory power exercised by the executive branch. Until 2015, he had the cooperation of Harry Reid in his neutering of legislative branch checks and balances. And, he will glide through to 2016, because the gelded Republicans in Congress don’t want to stir up so much as a minor fuss.
Meanwhile, the statist leftists smell blood in the water and are just waiting for Hillary to bleed out so they can back Elizabeth Warren to come in and take the dictatorship of tolerance and direction into every nook and cranny of our daily lives.
Liberals lie. That any conservative is surprised by that is a little sad.
I think the only way to undo the discrimination law mess would be to burn all of them. But what conservative has the guts to say that he is in favor of the theoretical discrimination of blacks by whites? Or that he is in favor of the unequal treatment of women and other minorities in the workplace?
Stop throwing shade on people exercising their rights to posture sanctimoniously. You’re going to trigger someone!
If the information in the Des Moines Register is true about the students and alumni protesting, then the applicant may be very well known to them. I wouldnlike to know if the applicant, besides being gay, is he a practicing Catholic? That is does he attend mass on Sundays and Holydays of Obligation. There are parishes where a priest will offer mass for the gay group Dignity. One such parish is/was St. Ambrose in West Hollywood. All a gay person has to do is go to confession. The priest before giving absolution will counsael him/her not to frequent occasions of sin (the bars), then assigns a penance and gives absolution.
I know, I heard confessions for three years until I decided my gay life was more important to me than my spiritual life.
If the teacher hasn’t taken an “action” to be gay-married or been exposed to have taken it up the pooper, then discriminating against him for “being gay” is the same as if one discriminated against him for consuming shellfish.
For the love of Backpfeifengesicht please drop the not serving pizza at gay weddings, I would like to pretend I don’t know of any gays that cheap and tacky.
Part of my training was at a catholic hospital I chose it because it was the better learning alternative for a clinical rotation. Despite having a boyfriend at the time no one there found out I was gay. Catholic Hospitals threat those who can’t pay better than other hospitals.
This teacher obviously didn’t want to play by the rules that came with the job.
