10 Reasons that Skepticism Is the Reasonable Attitude Toward Global Warming

There is a mook (that’s right, I said a mook and I meant it) over at the Chronicle of Higher Education who laments that the unwillingness of members of the public to blindly and unquestioningly accept the “scientific consensus” that CO2 from SUV’s and jet travel is causing earthquakes and every bad thing that ever happens ever.

Because, of course, nothing says “science denier” like a demand for evidence and empirical truth.

There are, in fact, myriad reasons to have skepticism about whether human activity is leading to catastrophic global warming, such that we must all sacrifice our standard of living to prevent the prophesied Global Warming Apocalypse. Here’s 10 off the top of my head.

1. All of the remedies put forth by the AGW proponents advance the progressive left agenda: increased Government regulation, diminished liberty, and abolish what’s left of the global free enterprise system in favor of a centrally planned political economy.

2. The AGW proponents won’t let anybody look at the data that supposedly supports their Global Warming hypothesis.

3. AGW proponents refuse to debate climate change skeptics in a public forum;people who think they can win the argument want to have the argument.

4. You should always be skeptical when people demand that opposing views should be censored; again people who think they can win the argument want to have the argument.

5. If carbon dioxide is such a horrible threat, why are the AGW proponents flying around the world in CO2-spewing jets? It’s kind of like televangelists preaching that drinking, sex, and gambling are the road to Hell then going to Vegas to get drunk and pick up hookers.

6. 95% of global warming forecast models have been wrong. Also, the models were apparently designed to produce an outcome of global warming.

7. There is considerable evidence that the global warming data has been fudged in the direction of warmfulness.

8. Contrary to the doomsday predictions of the Global Warming Cult, the Atlantic Ocean is getting colder, not warmer.

9. The Environmental Left has a long history of making hysterical proclamations of DOOM (all caused by humans engaging in capitalism and self-fulfillment) that have never panned out.

10. There hasn’t been any global warming for at least 18 years.

  1. Turns out the pool party narrative is fake as well. 100+ blacks invaded an HOA’s private pool many jumping a fence. 2 security guards couldn’t eject them

  2. There are a lot of “scientists” who have agendas rather than curiosity.

  3. 11. The last estimate I’ve heard was 2 degrees increase in the next hundred years. That will cause extinction of many species as well as melting of all the ice in Antarctica, lowered libidos, starvation, drought, bad teeth, increased popularity of hip hop music, and the designated hitter rule in the national league.

2 degrees, really? When the temperature goes up that much in the morning, can you even tell? I can’t.

    12. They’re best argument is “if you don’t agree you’re stupid”. Maybe not, but it’s the only one I’ve heard them use.

  5. As a meteorologist, I believe there is a small component that is based on man based CO2. However, climate fluctuations are normal, and we are in a warming period that has stabilized. One important thing to note is that areas that had weather records a one hundred years ago were in remote areas that are now urbanized. That may have something to do with some of the warming on Earth.

The average high temperature in Antarctica is -18 degrees F. A rise of 2 degrees over the entire earth would raise this average to -16 degrees F, still far too cold to cause any actual melting. The tropical areas would have to remain at present temperatures while the poles warmed significantly for the ice in Antarctica to melt, or for there to be a drastic tectonic plate shift pushing Antarctica off the southern pole by thousands of miles for it to melt.

  7. 13. AGW ignores the 2000-plus years of historical data that links societal tolerance of homosexuality directly with earthquakes, floods and volcanic eruptions. I think that there was also a near-miss from a meteor over Rome some time back.

  8. I think the best reason why skepticism is the reasonable Attitude toward global warming is that skepticism is the bedrock of science. The Scientific Method is based on skepticism, where you seek for proof of your hypothesis, and, finding no proof or contrary evidence, you go back and revisit your hypothesis.

The fact that the first reaction of True Believers in AGW to the 18 years of no global warming is to explain away the “pause” rather than question their hypothesis shows that it is the skeptics who are practicing science, not the proponents.

  9. “2 degrees, really? When the temperature goes up that much in the morning, can you even tell? I can’t.”

If the average temperature increased 2 degrees, that would have a significant effect.
But I agree that there is a lot of lying–and nefarious motives–behind the Global Warming hysteria.

  10. They keep the global warming climate change data secret for the same reason the TPP trade deal is secret: because it’s a crock.

If you’re a party to a deal that’s being negotiated without you, you’re the one being screwed.

Human activity is absolutely a factor in climate – as it the flight of a butterfly. The question is how much of a contribution is it.

Progressives use science like it uses everything else: as a weapon. If you ask a lefty about something like, oh, heritability of IQ, you will be denounced as a heretic and the question of the science will never come up.

  11. You forgot 100% of the Climate Change Hoax “scientists” get 100% of their income by supporting the hoax.

  12. pst314 – I don’t see why. If the average temperature increases 2 degrees, it will mean that those places where the temperature varies between -20 and 102 over the year will the vary between -18 and 104. How could that have a significant effect?

    Comment by John — June 9, 2015 @ 8:07 pm - June 9, 2015

  13. #14. We are ten thousand years into the present interglacial. Most interglacials have ended sooner than that. When science can say with 95+% certainty every single factor that caused the current glacial cycle (100K years of ice interspersed with a few K years of warm), and that ALL those factors no longer exist, I’ll worry about global warming (regardless of the cause). Until then, the next glaciation is what we ought to worry about.
