Speaking as someone who is standing outside the pissing contest between the equally obnoxious pro-Trump and anti-Trump camps, two things are clear:
- The FoxNews mediators were clearly on a mission to take out Donald Trump and pump up the Republican Party’s favored choice, Jeb Bush.
- Donald Trump is a thin-skinned, ill-tempered boor
However, if the debate hosts were out to get Donald Trump, they totally went about it the wrong way.
If Trump really is the clown and buffoon the GOP Establishment says he is, then Fox shouldn’t need to ask the attack dog, tabloid-style questions they asked during the debate. They could have asked meaningful, substantive questions and let Trump implode on his own. But instead, they asked questions like “So, why should women vote for a misogynist pig like you?” (paraphrasing), and the attack was so obvious it only galvanized his supporters further.
You don’t expose a buffoon by asking him buffoonish questions. You ask him serious questions and let him expose himself.
As a buffoon.
It was also wrong for Erick Erickson to disinvite Trump from the Red State forum. We’re not the left. We respect free speech and believe in giving people a chance to defend their ideas.
And also, that the best way to expose someone as a fool is to let him talk.
