Sheperd Fairey continues to establish himself as the Valentina Kulagina of American Socialism, coming with new iconography for the Bernie Sanders campaign.
Socialists, for some reason, really love this kind of stuff, the mating of terrible ideas with stunning graphic design. (Or maybe it’s not that great. When I first saw it, I mistook it for craft-beer label.)
It is aesthetically pleasing and invokes vintage classic pop art, bike gangs, and (as you note) beer.
It is not as in your face as the simplicity of BO’s icon so the socialism symbols in it are more subtle.
It brings to my mind Nazi symbolism; but then, Nazism *was* socialistic.
Does “Feel the Bern” mean “Grope Bernie”?
Much too-busy a design to be Nazi propaganda nor Soviet agit-prop. Reminds me of 1890s Midwestern American commercial large-scale poster design suitable for the sides of barns and street displays.
I am sure the nation will burn if he gets in.
I really really hate to pull a Godwin… but I see the Nazi propaganda too. Not to mention the entire layout of the thing is almost a dead-ringer for the German iron cross.
Then again, it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who actually knows their history. Nazi Germany was full of socialists, big-government bureaucrats, censorship for “the common good”, and vilification of multiple, culturally unpalatable sections of the population as evil and worthy of being killed.
It does look like a craft beer label, and living the Portland area, I should know from beer labels. Way too busy for a campaign symbol.
There are definitely elements of Soviet prop art in here: I’ve seen quite a few Soviet statues and posters who utilized a winged woman. It feels like it’s trying to merge Soviet imagery with old-school Americana stuff.
Maybe you don’t know, but Bernie is Jewish so I think the comparison to Nazism needs should be tempered.
@9.. Why? It was the first thing I noticed when I saw, Soviet style was second.
The last Bernie poster I saw someone waving around looked like something from Chairman Mao; this looks like the Third Reich. I’m not sure which is more honest.
Though Shepard Fairey and I probably agree on almost nothing other than that the sky is usually blue, I do think the design is quite stunning and am actually thinking of buying a shirt. If the hyper-inflated cost helps to pour dissolving liquid on the campaign of The Queen, it is the least I can do to assist.
Parteiadler. mikey should be familiar with this symbol.
