Murderous Ideologies and Absolute Power

A Long Read, but very worthwhile. It is not only an insight into the psychology behind the atrocities of Stalin, but also to the impulse that facilitated those atrocities.

Soviet Marxism rejected the very concept of human rights. Leninist ideology instructed one to think of classes, not humanity. What race was to Nazis, class was to Bolsheviks, and class origin, like race, was not something one chose. People born into bourgeois, noble, or kulak families had no more right to life than Jews or Gypsies did to Nazis.

Substitute the word “privilege” for class and you can hear the echoes of this impulse in the rhetoric of the Social Justice Left of today. The American left has tacitly rejected the very concept of human rights as being bequeathed by God and substituted the idea that rights are granted (and hence can be taken away) by the State. Free Speech, to the American Left, is no a basic human right, but an article of privilege that can be revoked if the speech offends a homosexual, a Muslim, a trasngendered, a feminist, an illegal immigrant, or any other identified group one is forbidden to offend. Freedom of religion, ditto. Freedom of conscience, ditto. On our college campuses… which are, in terms of ideological conformity, if not mass-murder … the most Stalinist institutions in our country, young males are, as a matter of policy, denied human rights such as due process when accused by rape, regardless of how specious the charge is.

And the tool to negate the universality of human rights is the notion of “privilege.” Hostility toward privilege is just warmed over Marxist class rhetoric, tarted up with big, academic-sounding nonsense words like “intersectionality” and “microaggression.”

The article goes into detail about the atrocities committed by Stalin and his underlings, and the justification for mass murder, imprisonment, and torture. And the root of it all was loyalty to Socialist Ideology and the Communist Party.

Comrades, none of us wishes or is able to be right against his Party. The Party in the last analysis is always right, because the Party is the sole historical instrument given the proletariat for the solution of its basic problems. . . . I know that one cannot be right against the party. It is only possible to be right with the Party and through the Party for history has not created other ways for the realization of what is right.

Something to think about whenever Hillary’s crimes or Obama’s abuses of power are defended by other Democrats for the good of the party. Something also to think about when social justice leftists like Dan Savage muse about how wonderful it would be if all Republicans “dropped dead” and are rewarded with applause from Bill Maher’s audience of trained leftist seals.  Or, for that matter, when the Democrat Left’s new pet hate group, #BlackLivesMatter, calls for and celebrates the murder of people they oppose, and are rewarded with positions of prominence at the Democrat National Convention.  Or the fact that the current Democrat president was mentored by a wannabe terrorist and mass murderer, who is not merely defended by the media and his party, but treated as an honored and celebrated citizen.

Socialism has always been a dehumanizing, destructive, and ultimately murderous ideology.

They wear those Che shirts for a reason, you know.

  1. “As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end, Amen.”

It’s official. Leftism has passed from “political philosophy” to “cult.” Doesn’t the FBI have a watchlist of those?

  3. I’ll bet our Fearless Leader is hobnobbing with his communist buddies over in Russia next year, to celebrate the centennial of the Bolshevik Revolution.

  4. A dictatorship by the power mongers is a combination of despots and ideology. The ideology “explains” the dictatorship to the useful idiots (Mao’s Little Red Book) and the pervasive goon squad of enforcers gives the ideology life over death meaning. Gary Saul Morson’s essay (in the link) touches upon the innate evil of the despots:

Baberowski believes that no ideas ever motivate violence. “To men of violence . . . ideas are only a means of legitimizing their lust for murder to those for whom violence is not a natural course of action. Neither Stalin nor Yezhov were guided by Marxism or its promises when they had people arrested, tortured, and killed. . . . It had absolutely nothing to do with the writings of European Marxism.” For Baberowski, ideas are not just a relatively minor factor, they have “absolutely nothing” to do with what happens. “Reasons and legitimizations play absolutely no role,” he insists elsewhere; they are just means of coping with meaningless violence. Since these statements pertain to all violence anywhere, they cannot be derived from the evidence, but represent an advance philosophical commitment.

Castro, Pol Pot, Mao, and Stalin, Saddam were all “cleansers” of classes of people but they also demanded total loyalty. It almost makes no difference if the loyalty was to them or a political formula they crafted which gave the people a roadmap for highly regulated survival. That is to say, the argument of ideology vs. tyranny is all but moot.

Hillary and big government establishment cronies are playing at robbing the treasury. They are skimming. The tax dollar comes in at 100¢ and reaches its target at 05¢ with the other 95¢ going to the skim, the bureaucracy, the cronies, the lawyers, and the black hole. That is assured income and growth for those who play the game and help manipulate the process. For the taxpayer, almost all is lost and replaced by deficit spending (which the fat cats skim as above) levied on the heads of ourselves and our posterity.

There is no need to brutalize any class of people in this system. All one needs to do to make a fortune is to service the system and become a crony cog in the churning corruption. This is Mafia as government in the sense that the participants are Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) taking from the masses and giving to themselves. This is not so much reverse Robin Hood as it is the natural decline of civilization in which the marginal utility difference between a $20 bottle of wine and $450 bottle of wine is a mere 92points to 94points, but also a whopping $430. The ruse being that a rich palette knows the difference and so does the pallet of the rich.(“Look at me” my bathtub has gold faucets.) Ideology is reduced to projecting the myth that only the best and the brightest are in the 1% or living off of them.

Socialism has always been a dehumanizing, destructive, and ultimately murderous ideology.

Let’s shelve the “murderous” part and stipulate that the Nazis, the Leninists, the Stalinists, the Castros, the Maoists, and others went that route. That, I would submit, is because it was the quickest route between two points for the thugocracy in charge. Killing off the dissidents was not so much for the preservation of the ideology as it was a practical solution for maintaining iron fist control.

The “velvet glove revolution” socialist countries have semi-wittingly become the proverbial frogs in the pan of water in which the temperature of the water gradually increases. The corruptocrats skimming off the money transfers in these socialist countries have one eye on their rapidly increasing gains and the other on their exit route.

However, the little people who are stuck on ideology are a different story. They can be thugs looking for a reason to riot or partisans looking to rumble or romantics looking to scoff and scorn or idealizers ready to vanquish. From my experience most idealists fulminate and then just stew.

The corruptocrats like the Clintoons, Soros, Podesta, and nearly all Democrat big wigs and way too many Republican professional grifters just want to keep the gravy train slopping through their hands. Willie Sutton robbed banks because “that’s where the money is.” Socialists skim the money flow because 1/2 of one percent of a few trillion passing by is not chump change.
