Hasta La Vista, socialist glutenphobes.
A proposal for California to secede from the United States was submitted to the Secretary of State’s Office Thursday.
The proposed “Calexit” initiative – its name borrowed from the UK’s “Brexit” departure from the EU – would ask voters to repeal part of the state constitution that declares California an inseparable part of the U.S.
Secretary of State Alex Padilla said the group behind the proposal, Yes California Independence Campaign, was cleared to begin attempting to collect nearly 600,000 voter signatures needed to place the plan on the ballot.
I’ve got my fingers crossed, please succeed!
Sorry, but if California doesn’t want to stay in the US (or if the US doesn’t want to keep California), then it would only be right to return Alta California to all those good people in Mexico who ceded it to us in 1848.
Who knows, maybe President Trump might be able to persuade Mexico to pay for a few miles of wall in exchange for getting California back.
Don’t let the door hit you where the Good Lord split you! 🙂

Leftists love their futile dreams. Not sure whether they understand that if it were to go to ballot & it won, that it would morally undermine any further “majority” wins in a general election for decades to come. Not sure that they understand that living in an economic quagmire, no matter how large their economy isn’t a good formula for sovereignty. Not to mention the taxation that would have to double to be a functioning nation-state with expenditures for self-defense, border security & little things like that. There would be tariffs at the border & incoming trade headed towards America would have to be diverted to Texas or the East Coast; thereby, cutting off billions in revenue a severe dent at the port of LA. But you know, they pulled out their blue Obongo decorations & catchy catch catchphrases to promote it all, along with their “rational” arguments & Federal expenditures in their state at the ready. Sure, it’ll work. They never have rolling blackouts & the need for water to be piped in to support their population. But everyone loves Disneyland & that’s what will pay for everything. Oh, wait! They can trade with Mexico! Their business will be free to outsource their manufacturing down there. One minute these people find the US Constitution & the reality of History, a hindrance. Next they embrace it & finally they end up saying it doesn’t matter anymore – again. They want a borderless world, now they want a border with the rest of the country to protect themselves from a Federal Government that they, themselves have promoted to be an overwhelming abomination. California Dreamin’. Didn’t Cass Elliot choke on a ham sandwich & die?
While everyone on all sides thinks this a fantastic idea, the last time a state(s) tried to pick up and leave it didn’t work out so well for them. I’m pretty sure there’s even a SCotUS ruling that says they can’t.
On the other hand (and I mean no disrespect to those on this side of the Mississippi whose wounds still haven’t healed), it would be kinda fun to watch a modern day Sherman tear through SoCal.
To paraphrase Dennis Miller “Liberalism is a nude beach. It’s seems sexy, great and hot in your mind until you actually visit one.”
Idea: Have only the counties in Washington, Oregon, California which voted for Clinton secede from the Union. And then… the United States gets all of the environmental votes by promising to restore Hetch Hetchy and Owens Lake to their pristine condition. (By not allowing the Bay Area and Los Angeles to withdraw water from them! The two areas lie in Red counties in California!)
Every few years some NYC politician wastes NYS tax dollars on a study to prove that NYC is supporting the state and should leave. I’m hopeful every single time that they do, only to be disappointed time after time and wasted money when they discover the opposite. Get rid of them!
“Idea: Have only the counties in Washington, Oregon, California which voted for Clinton secede from the Union.”
Better yet how about everything left, I mean west, of the San Andreas?
Whoa, hoss, not so fast. Each lil Californy being has a share of the national debt of the United States of America. Conservatively, it is about $60,000 per capita. With 38.8 million per capitas that would be $60,000 x 38,800,000 = $2,280,000,000,000.00 succession fee payable on demand. (We will have to just overlook the illegals leeching on the welfare system and be happy enough to take them off the rolls.)
Bye, bye California. Hope you find a substitute for the Colorado River water and out-of-state/country electricity.
This seems really pointless and stupid.
It would be much easier if the 2%ers hostile to the COTUS would simply emigrate to the socialistic utopian hellholes of Canada or Mexico. The majority population is not ceding any part of the republic to less than 2% of the population. I understand the sadistic 2%er Mengele types that operate the drug and human trafficking cartels in Mexico need more ovens built.
Probably one of the most stupid ideas running in the left’s head right now – and that is saying much! But – enjoy it as it has so many problems with it, and it has about as much chance as a snowball in hell has for a long existence.
Dreams of Ecotopia here we come…
I’m not so sure that Calexit is all that silly.
The left* has spent decades fracturing the citizenry into warring factions which have some geographical component (e.g. coastal lefties are openly contemptuous of people in, say, the South or the Plains states).
Perhaps a loose confederation of nations would lessen tensions. We could adopt certain EU policies to facilitate trade and travel (with adjustments to preserve sovereignty). Then, if California wants to impose draconian carbon taxes, they can do it. If CA wants an uncontrolled border with Mexico, they can have it. And so on.
While DJT will (hopefully) remove some of the obstacles to commerce in the US and lessen the burden on the poor caused by uncontrolled immigration, I still think we’re due for a crash. There are too many structural problems left unaddressed (entitlements, technology+automation, anti-patriotic educations, etc).
One big advantage to smaller nations is that their governments will be easier to control and people can choose to live in places more in line with their views (if the lefties in Lawrence (Berkeley on the Plains), KS want to live in a leftist utopia, they can move to CA and leave the rest of us in peace).
* The right isn’t blameless, here, but their contributions in the fracturing are a mere blib compared to the decades-long leftist march through the institutions.
Yeah, what is it about liberals and not eating gluten?
She did it on purpose. It’s a fact.
And she deliberately didn’t tell them right away.
Hang her.
Perhaps CrayCray doesn’t want California to leave because he fears that without the federal money pouring in, the new country’s very serious financial and civic problems would become apparent if the rest of us weren’t propping them up.
@15, 17: perhaps it’s time that civil servants be held personally liable (criminal and civil) for “mistakes”.
In cases of legitimate error, immunity makes sense. Where there’s no good-faith effort to avoid error (think Lois Lerner, Kamala Harris… or a police dept that turns a blind eye to a bad cop or perv teacher), it’s not fair that taxpayers shoulder all the burden.
A few prison terms and/or ruinous money judgements would send a necessary message to our public “servants”.
I know it’s slightly off topic, but here’s a good story.

Hang them.
As intriguing as Calexit might be, they’ll be incapable of carrying it out successfully. Inexorably, they’ll bungle it badly, and we’ll be stuck with the wreckage…and the bill. It’s California after all!
The only positive will be the revived State of Jefferson, if only to counter balance the admission of the new-states of Puerto Rico and the District Federale.
Dear me, Vince just keeps getting more and more incoherent.
The DC crazies want to be called “New Columbia”. The residents of CO and NC are not amused.

Think about it. 53 representatives would leave, 39 of them Democrats. Reapportion them among the other 49 states. We would then have an Electoral College that would favor the GOP except in blowout years.
One other comment. The water dammed behind the Colorado River would never flow to California from Hoover Dam and projects in Utah. Therefore, they would dry up to a shriveled prune, much like Diane Feinstein.
Cray Cray:
Asking for the death penalty for a sitting senator. I thought you would be anti death penalty.
@11 “this seems pointless and stupid” that’s why its a liberal idea.
well if they do, as a native born, Republican Californian, I’d be a refugee to the rest of the US. I hope you will take me in as a political refugee! Oh, I would need some hollywood type to buy my house at an inflated prices just to get me out of their paradise!
Better put some ice on that, al-Cray-da. (As your idol, serial rapist Bill Clinton, said to Kathleen Willey.)

Here is a hilarious John and Ken bit uploaded to my YoutTube.
All of the soft, white, liberals in California will find themselves locked inside with a bunch of, er, um, “diverse” people who will demand a rather abrupt redistribution of wealth.
Good luck with that.
I’m interested in seeing just HOW MUCH they want to secede. Is it a real secession? Or is it like Québec or Puerto Rico: out with the oppressors…. but let’s keep the same benefits (defense, welfare, all the infrastructure others helped pay for) and the same monetary system?
As much as I want this to succeed, if they went on their own all the parasites would flee. China would likely take it over. Instead declare it in rebellion along with all sanctuary cities.
Col Tom Kratman has covered how this would play out over several articles at everyjoe.
