And the Democrats Want to Block This Guy

February 3, 2017 by V the K

Reason has an article on Neil Gorsuch’s dissent in a case that ruled that schools have the right to have kids arrested for burping in class. After reading it, I don’t want Neil Gorsuch on the Supreme Court… I want him cloned eight times and replace everybody on the Supreme Court.

But, but… he’s Trump’s judge! And that means he’s a NAZI! And anybody who associates with Nazis must be KILLED! (Though that doesn’t stop the Coastal fruits from buying Hugo Boss. You know, the guy who designed the SS uniforms.)

    Loved it.

But one* reason schools have “resource officers” (armed agents of the state) is because teachers have their hands tied. And, of course, a fair number of gov’t school teachers (not all, of course), are lacking common sense.

Back in the day, it wasn’t that uncommon for a smart-ass to get his head knocked by a passing teacher. Most often, that did the trick.

Back in HC (Catholic), I was in the equivalent of an AP physics class. Some kid dozed off and started to snore. The teacher (one of my faves – an excellent instructor) picked up a chalk-soaked eraser and, without missing a beat, beaned the kid from across the room. (Teach also coached baseball and tennis).

We all got a laugh and the kid didn’t doze off for the rest of the year.

If that happened now, the teacher would’ve been arrested and the school sued out of operation.

    * Another reason being that enough students are violent enough to require a police presence.

KCRob, this is correct, but the teacher could have given the kid detention. That is still allowed. He could have sent him to the Principal’s office. That is also still allowed.

Or, the police could have escorted him to the Principal’s office.

The point being, just because the law ALLOWS you to arrest a child for burping in gym doesn’t mean they should.

@KCRob, agree wholeheartedly. I also look at the rise of SROs as another symptom of the disintegration of the family & community (both separately and as a single unit). Part of what allowed your teacher to do what he did was the social contract that said the adults were all on the same side to help raise a generation of good citizens. While the parents may not have always agreed with the specific punishment, they respected that the school was doing its job of educating kids and would tell Johnny that it was *his* problem to solve, including follow up at home with additional correction where necessary.

I compare this to the situation my sister faces as a high school math teacher. She has a couple of the IB classes, and has mentioned on more than one occasion that many of the parents enable their accelerated kids’ laziness and lack of learning to fail (or at least be seen as imperfect). Rather than forcing precious little Susie (who may legally be considered an adult) to accept that she is the reason she got a “B”, they push for grade changes, extra credit work, etc. (it often boils down to they don’t like the school enforcing rules given their lack of enforcement at home). This has gone up to the principal on multiple occasions. Lucky for her the teachers and the principal are all on the same page with the need to present a united front in all but extreme circumstances.
