Is This Normal?

A dude in the Netherlands has contracted HIV despite being on PReP.

During his first seven months in the study he averaged 56 anal sex partners per month and about 30 episodes of condomless sex a month. He averaged 16 days per month when he did have condomless sex and on those days averaged 3.7 partners.

“This PrEP user came to the study saying he had no doubt he would acquire HIV unless he went on PrEP,” said Dr Hoornenborg. “He was highly educated and knew exactly what the risks were but did not feel he was able to change his sexual risk pattern, so took action by applying for the study.”

He did have ‘chemsex’ and took mephedrone, GHB/GBL, ketamine, cocaine and amphetamine, and admitted to injecting ketamine twice but insisted he used sterile needles. He had two episodes of rectal gonorrhoea and one of rectal chlamydia in his first seven months on PreP.

OK, I’ll admit to being a little naive, but 56 partners a month? Is that a typical score in some segments of ‘The Community?’ Not to be a prude, but it seems like a lot to me. It also seems like it wouldn’t leave a lot of time for much else in your life if you’re doing so much… that.

  1. That’s not normal, unless you’re a skank whore trying to pay the rent. But disposable prostitutes aren’t part of any community.

  2. PReP isn’t the miracle drug people claim it is. Sure, it greatly reduces your chance of catching it, but it isn’t a vaccine. And it doesn’t guard against anything else, so rates of other STDs in the MSM community have skyrocketed.

There has been some encouraging news on a possible HIV vaccine in recent months. But still, there are plenty of other bugs out there. If you’re going to do anal, use protection, and if you just have to do bareback, make sure you’re monogamous. Which seems to be a tall order these days.

  5. “And he’s highly educated?”

Well, he knows the difference between rectal gonorrhea and rectal chlamydia. They don’t teach that in public schools.

  6. PReP is effective within reason. Especially if you use condoms.

However, almost two different partners/day is not within reason. Two different partners/week isn’t within reason. But, each to his/her own.

However, if you want to report on the absolute fringes of society, clutch your pearls like most anyone thinks this is normal behaviour, and extract some kind of meaning out of it, knock yourself out.

  7. And he’s highly educated?

That’s the line that got me as well.

It seems like if someone is having sex and doing drugs at this rate, that wouldn’t leave room for much else in life. Anytime you weren’t doing it, you’d have to be preparing to do it, or coming down from a drug high.

One things for sure, if that guy farted right next to you, you’d never hear it.

  8. Yes, he’s highly educated.

Just like the rioters at UC Berkeley were highly educated.

Nobody said they were smart, only educated.

  9. Reminds me, what ever happened with that ‘artist’ who planned to bed a different guy every night for a year?

He was protesting awareness or something…

  11. And the guy’s 50-years old? Whom was he having sex with? He must be either a sex god, or a merchant banker, a megachurch pastor or an aging rock star. (Well, maybe the last one was unfair, but…)

“A clue may lie in the fact that the man had a lot of high-risk sex, even for someone enrolling in a PrEP trial.”

A clue? Ya’ think? You gotta lurve t’ scientific method… [/sarcasm]

  13. Fifty-six partners a month? Blanche Devereaux would be jealous!

However, if you want to report on the absolute fringes of society, clutch your pearls like most anyone thinks this is normal behaviour, and extract some kind of meaning out of it, knock yourself out.

*Sigh* And as usual, al-Cray-da wants to blame society and not the perp. SMH…

To be fair, we had a lot of very smart and very educated (not necessarily overlapping) people on this side of the pond who insisted on voting for HRC. Plus almost as many self-identified atheists praying like mad for an asteroid strike.

  24. Meh. My eyes start to glaze over whenever I see hand-wringing stories on a loss in the war against HIV and see that the proof involves ‘chemsex’ and drugs like horse tranquilizers. Most recreational drugs have an immunosuppressive effect and therefore automatically skew any results or conclusions.

But if this case isn’t proof that the United States needs to relax its laws and attitudes towards drug use so that we become more like The Netherlands, I don’t know what is.

  25. So not normal. I haven’t been with 52 different men in my life and I am 57! But I have also been in a monogamous relationship for 32 years.

    Comment by Paul — February 19, 2017 @ 12:02 am - February 19, 2017

  29. Prep shouldn’t be a replacement for condoms, and taxpayers shouldn’t foot the bill of over $1500 a month.

I am not even sure it’s possible to have 56 different partners a month if you have a full time job, are we sure it wasn’t the number of times he had sex with a smaller number of partners a month?
