The Soft Bigotry of Low Expectations

The state of New York has decided it’s OK for schoolteachers to be functionally illiterate, as long as they meet diversity quotas.

I am not making this up.

More black and Hispanic teachers were failing the “Academic Literacy Skills Test” than white teachers. Because diversity of staff is more important than the quality of instructional staff, the state decided that passing the test will no longer be a requirement to teach in New York schools.

BTW, isn’t there additional bigotry in the idea that while white kids can learn from teachers of any race, black kids can only learn from black teachers, and Hispanics from Hispanic teachers? Or is it just me.

  1. this is just the left doing whatever they can to further destroy the competence of the educational system.

  2. In the can’t-be-fired world of the protected bureaucracy, there is a system known as “pass-the-trash.” The senior administrator arranges for a clunker under his purview to be transferred to the staff of another administrator with less seniority. Eventually, one frozen-in-place deadbeat administrator ends up with a whole department of “lets-don’t-but-say-we-did” chuckleheads. It happens in school systems with regularity. It seems to happen in VA hospitals.

Public education is forced to practice an unofficial form of triage. The walking-wounded get busy work, the can’t-be-saved get minimally tolerated and the must-be-attended get attention.

Have you heard of “outcome-based education”? That is when the kid is graduated with the skill he has attained. An “outcome-based” brake job on your automobile would be driving away with whatever the mechanic did or didn’t do to you brakes.

Every government bureaucracy has its cadre of people who are doing little more than sheltering in place. Government employment is the socialist’s wet dream. These “teachers” who can’t pass the functional literacy tests are “outcome-based” teachers. They get the same pay and they get to moan and gripe about the respect they get and they basically get left alone because they have been triaged. As “walking-wounded” they do what they are “able” to do and when they don’t feel like doing that, they sleep, kvetch, watch porn or just compost.

  3. Worse than that, it says the black and minority teachers cannot be expected to perform as well as white teachers.

  4. Here, I feel for those parents who have little options to get their kids out of the commie indoctrination centers.

Hence, how one is lucky to have a decently informed, if not perfect, dad.

To survive the ordeal that otherwise can FUBAR your brain for decades to come.

I mean, just look at UC Berkeley, 2017.

  5. has anybody ever notice that every time the left wants to shove some terrible idea down the throats of the American people its always because it’s good for the blacks? sure blacks will do better with less competent teachers.

  6. @5

I wish I had enough money and time to start a movement:

    Black Brains Matter!

I’d push for the first project of law to deport all the self-proclaimed “american” commies and socialists to any one of their paradises overseas.

At their own expenses, of course.

    Ahh. Stop daydreaming, Cyril.

  7. Darn it.

    McCarthy was on to something.

What have you done to yourself, America?!

  8. At least it’s just teachers. Given the raw material (students) they have to work with, will it really make that much difference?

The scarier cases are police and fire. The FDNY has had to hire and pay people retroactively that failed due to screening tests (I’ve seen some of the questions on the tests – they’re mostly common sense and require little formal training. Also, it appears that being able to carry an unconscious victim from a burning building is sexist).

And then there are the cops. Various cities have hired officers with criminal histories that also could not pass the pre-hire screenings. Chicago had one guy (lily white) that had terrible comments about his character from academy instructors and could not shoot straight. After a couple of bites at the apple, a judge ordered him hired and issued a badge and gun.

Take someone unable to pass common sense screening, give them authority, weapons, $30,000 police car — what could go wrong? Regardless of the damage, We The People get to pick up the check.

I wonder if some on the left have become “race realists”. Instead of judging individuals based on their skills and the content of their character, they look at skin color when putting a thumb on the scales.

  9. Various cities have hired officers with criminal histories that also could not pass the pre-hire screenings.

Around the turn of the century, the then-Director Of Public Safety (combo police/fire chief) for the second largest city in my state was talking about how they had to lower their standards just in order to get decent recruits. His examples were taking candidates who may have had some youthful drug use as long as they were clean & sober by official adulthood and no recent use within a set period of time. I know that overlooking prior deficiencies has only gotten worse over the intervening time. Many law enforcement agencies have managed to skate a bit by hiring recent military veterans (who’ve already gone through most of the requisite screening); but that has created other issues, since they often need to be deprogrammed from the automatic shoot-to-kill mentality and have generally greater issues with unnecessary force.

Then there’s the succeeding chief of police in the same community who was previously head of the state version of the FBI and came in with a mentality that ‘everyone is guilty of a crime and it’s our job to match crimes with perpetrators’. Under his watch, there was plenty of employee drug testing—for everything but steroids. So there was a sizable percentage of the force who did the whole bodybuilding thing and would come unglued at the slightest challenge to their authority (even if it was a refusal to answer questions which were none of their business). I had a conversation with a city councilperson of my acquaintance to whom I warned of massive settlements if they didn’t get their PD under control. His response: “Oh, they’ve already paid out a lot of money. Just last week we paid a $10,000 settlement.” It was basically seen as a cost of doing business. Unfortunately, too many cities have that mentality of which one of the end results is places like Chicago, where an agreement with a third-party organization has resulted in cumbersome paperwork and a general slowdown in policing stops, which in turn has resulted in an explosion of crime. Fun times all around.

  10. This country’s law abiding people will stay in the presence of cops for as long as they care enough about their 2A rights.

Cops are just people on tax payer funded paychecks. Even if the socialist mafia at the city, county, or state level, lower the recruitment standards, just make sure the cops around you got the memo that you know about *your* own rights and you don’t give a flip that they don’t.

What you don’t want to happen is the european cops vs peoples example whereby there are only two categories of cops left in the vicinity of the people:

    1) mostly disarmed, self-castrated cops instructed to stand and watch when the barbarians pillage you — while the same cops can still fine you in the mail because of your car park or the size of your front yard fence;

    2) cops in military gears who don’t get send to your neighborhood unless they are in the size ballpark of a company

  13. There are studies that say a 30 IQ point gap makes communication difficult. The gap between the average US Asian and average US black is in that ballpark.
