Fake News at The New York Times

Via HotAir. Just click the link because photos are involved. I’ll summarize.

  • NYT Sports tweets out 2 photos, showing how way fewer New England Patriots attended the White House celebration in 2017 than in 2015. Intended message: even the Patriots hate Trump.
  • Patriots then counter-tweet photos that blow NYT Sports out of the water.
  • It turns out that photos were staged differently in the 2 years and NYT Sports should never have tried to compare them.

The photos were real. But the story was fake, anyway.

This kind of thing happens all the time. Our media, at work.

UPDATE: The editor apologized. He deserves a nod because, as Craig put it, “He didn’t blame anyone else…and owned up to it.” Which is rare nowadays.

Then again, as V pointed out, he still didn’t admit the real nature of what he did: that, motivated by political animus, he tried to use the Sports page to make political points.

For an apology to be effective (morally and emotionally), you have to 1) really understand what you did, and 2) really be sorry that you would do such a thing. Not just sorry that the other person took it badly. Or just sorry that they caught you.

  1. there was another picture of this ceremony that had members of the patriots on the stairs and on the porch. somehow the newspaper with the most complete news coverage missed that picture. the truth is always the first casualty of Marxism.

  2. Now the editor has issued a mea culpa, but he doesn’t admit the full truth of the matter. “I did it because the president is a Republican and I hate him.”

  3. So the Chicoms and Russkies are moving troops due to North Korea and the Big News is 1) O’Reilly’s solid-gold boot from Fox News and 2) the Patriots’ visit to the WH.

Note to DJT: you need to get busy keeping us out of another war(s) and remember your promises during the election.

It was the Flight 93 election but I’m still hoping we don’t pile it in.

  4. I figured there was something up when I saw the photos. i just hadn’t figured out what. It’s amazing how adults working at “proper” news outlets today still don’t understand how quickly the internet moves. It’s also depressing.

  5. @4 – yup. I’m always amazed at “facts” that come from the mouths and pens of public figures (from across the political spectrum) that, with less than a minute of Googling or Binging, are revealed to be a ol’ crock o’ you-know-what.

Of course, it’s been said that objective truth is racist…

  6. The Minitruth strikes again.

  7. I don’t think the NYTimes story was intended for the sort of people who check facts.

  8. VtK, you have to admit, though, he did apologize in a way that was refreshing. He didn’t blame anyone else, he admitted his mistake, took full responsibility, and owned up to it.

Yes, we know he pulled a Rather (publishing something you believe is the truth without checking it out because it fits your narative) but he at least made no excuses for the blunder.

  9. Craig, good point and you and V together prompted me to update the post.

  10. Maybe it should repost to the top of the queue with the fresh updates.

  11. Nah. If you want to say more about it at the top of the queue, do a new post 😉 (You’re doing a lot of good ones right now. I wouldn’t want to kick them out.)

  12. Really? I thought I was being windy and vituperative.

That Berkeley thing really grinds my gears. It took 4Chan to identify a suspect because law enforcement DGAF when the assailant is leftist and the victim is a right-winger.
