Another media football

The Washington Post claims that President Trump leaked classified info in a meeting with Russians.

NSA McMaster then denied the story. “The story that came out tonight, as reported, is false.”

I’m not sure what to make of this. (So, feel free to tell me in the comments.)

From what I can gather, Trump was discussing a particular threat posed by ISIS. He is accused – by anonymous, off-the-record sources – of letting slip a certain city name that, in Allahpundit’s words, would “let the Russians figure out how a U.S. ally was getting its information on ISIS. He didn’t reveal who the source was or how that info was obtained and WaPo isn’t claiming that he did.”

Legally (and again following Allahpundit), leaking even such a small detail would be a big deal for anyone else in the government, “but because the president has the power to declassify classified information, he can blab all he wants…” If that’s true, then there’s no legal issue. But that does not answer the substantive questions:

  • Did Trump let something slip, that he shouldn’t have?
  • Or is The Washington Post merely extending its campaign of “Russia!” innuendo in trying to destroy a constitutionally-elected President?
  • Or perhaps both? (Picture every President being prone to an occasional indiscretion; and then The Washington Post choosing to bury the story if it’s Obama, but make a huge story if it’s Trump. I mean, for political reasons. What were Obama’s slips, that they never told us about?)

IF this story reflects something that really happened: Is McMaster now saving Trump’s rear end? Would McMaster, reportedly a proponent of the U.S. invading Syria, then gain an upper hand in the Trump administration?

UPDATE: Yes, for the Left to fuss is hypocritical. In the past, CIA Director Leon Panetta and Vice President Joe Biden have blurted out classified information, resulting in deaths.

… it was [Panetta’s] loose talk after the Osama bin Laden raid that exposed a Pakistani doctor, Shakil Afridi, who helped locate the Al Qaeda leader. As a result, Afridi was imprisoned on fabricated charges and will live under fear of assassination for the rest of his life…

Panetta did not reveal that critical intelligence in a private meeting with a foreign emissary, but to the entire world, on CBS News’ 60 Minutes.

Even worse was the Obama White House’s decision to reveal that it was U.S. Navy SEAL Team 6 that carried out the bin Laden raid.

As Jeffrey Kushner recalled in the Washington Times: “On May 3, at an event in Washington, Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. did the unthinkable: He publicly revealed the identity of the special-operations unit responsible for bin Laden’s killing…”

The response came on August 6, 2011, when the Taliban shot down a Chinook helicopter in Afghanistan, killing 30 soldiers. Among the dead: 15 members of SEAL Team 6. Years later, the fallen heroes’ families remain outraged at the Obama administration: “In releasing their identity, they put a target on their backs,” one of the fathers told U.S. News and World Report in 2013.

  1. Hi ILoveCapitalism,
I like the questions you ask, “as reported” but perhaps there are other questions that we could ask on things that were not reported! 🙂

  2. Well, we DO know that Hillary let slip how long it takes us to respond to a nuclear threat…

  3. The Democrat Media Complex is definitely calling the shots & leading the Democrats & various assorted Leftists. They’ve invalidated themselves over & over again. I would tend to believe Gen McMasters on the issue involved & that anything that Trump might have said, was common knowledge. The fast pace of the Left’s media is quite rabid now. Looking at a Twitter list which includes Dem Media, it’s quite amazing the percentage of anti-Trump garbage. In the long run, it doesn’t matter. Nothing Leftists say actually matters anymore. Running in place is all they’re good for. It’s not use for anyone on the Right to try to correct the record. The Dem Media isn’t the only game in town & they know it. What’s sad is; the civilians on the Left who believe the false narratives. They just don’t know how retarded they sound.

  4. As for “Cas” (#1) & her idea. The assumption that the false narratives are correct would be needed in order to ask “about other things.” The drivel on Ancient Aliens is similar in scope. :::If something something happened, then what would have happened with furthermore.::: It’s simply a waste of time.

  5. What part of “diplomacy” and negotiating with frenemies don’t the Dementedcrats get? We should hardly be concerned with protecting the Jihadi ISIL Mohammedans nor the North Koreans’ secrets if it furthers “our interests”. And intelligence means-and-methods can have a very-short “expires by date”, even if the information is still current.

And it’s well-past-time for Senators McCain and Graham to retire …and go away.

  6. 2 things: isn’t WAPo one of those news organizations that has been in trouble before for using fake or dubious sources? For some reason that idea sounds familiar…and, isn’t it possible this is a left-based attempt at smearing the POTUS for not inviting them to the Russian debrief? Whatever the case may be, if the POTUS was wrong, then he should be held accountable…I just am having a hard time believing anyone anymore about anything

  7. So, how many people were in that room when compartmented information was discussed? Not many, I’d venture. If the leaker was in the room he’d be fired by now. So, the leaker wasn’t in the room, was he.

Somebody’s lying and it ain’t McMaster.

  8. It’s all irrelevant now that the truth about Seth Rich’s murder is coming out to smash the Lib’s ridiculous Russia narrative. They thought they had a winner. Looks like they have a scandal that’s actually worse than the Watergate label they’ve been trying to pin on Trump. This is going to be good.

  11. Fred Fleitz • Published May 16, 2017 • Fox News:

The real scandal here concerns the current and former U.S. officials who spoke to the Washington Post to generate this story. We don’t know if these sources lied, misrepresented what went on in the Trump meeting with the Russians, or were second-guessing what Trump told them.

The leaks also are another indication of the serious problem the Trump administration continues to face with leakers. Major house cleanings at the NSC, CIA, ODNI and the State Department to address this serious security threat are long overdue. It is urgent that the Trump administration bring in new blood to replace hundreds of Obama loyalists placed in key positions throughout the government by the last administration.

Just as serious is how partisan cowards entrusted with national security information are anonymously leaking U.S. intelligence to ruin an American president and our democratic system. It’s about time the mainstream media and congressional Democrats start focusing on the dangers of such leaks to our security and system of government instead of just using them to advance their political agenda against President Trump.

The WaPo released their story at 5:02pm EDT in order to catch the 6:00pm establishment and honest news broadcasters scrambling for information. The story is all innuendo and without substance, but it is full of enough red meat to attract the Trump haters to the screen.

Coinkydink or not, the CIA leaks their stuff to the WaPo.

For some time now, the establishment media has been sowing seeds to cause dissension between McMaster and Trump. Simultaneously, the establishment media has been eroding the footing of Dina Powell. CNN has reported that Dina Powell is a big buddy of Ivanka Trump and that Ivanka pushed daddy into putting Dina Powell on the NSC.

The establishment media and the DemonizingRats and the Never-Trumpsters of all stripes are hard at work trying to make Trump shoot holes in the bottom of his own boat.

Machiavelli tutored the Prince about when and how much ruthlessness is necessary in order to maintain peace and stability. To be “Machiavellian” is to be willing to be guided by necessity even in the face of a cacophony of virtuous moralizing.

And what we are witnessing is (of all things ironic) the DemonizingRats screaming about virtue and morality as Trump thumps them.

Quantum physicist Maxine Waters is a seasoned rabble rouser and most secure in her element when the rabble are roused. The Progressive leech class will always turn out for the possibility of a riot.

    • White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway, at the end of a Fox & Friends segment, endorsed Ivanka Trump’s fashion lined DemonizingRats immediately singled her out for investigation by the Office of Congressional Ethics. (She’s in Congress?)

    • The DemonizingRats smeared Deputy Assistant to the President Sebastian Gorka as a Nazi sympathizer.

    • The DemonizingRats keep up the ongoing defamation of White House Chief Strategist Stephen K. Bannon as a “white nationalist.”

    • The DemonizingRats and the establishment media are trying to make America appear ungovernable under the “ineptitude” of President Donald J. Trump. Their hope is that voters will turn to them for deliverance.

Obambi had an eight year reign. His minions in various agencies had more than enough sufficient time to insinuate themselves into the upper echelons and to align their stars with Obambi’s. Politics is all about power and the exercise of power. These Obambi minions can hope to last out the first term, but they know they will be outed sooner or later. So, these minions are hardly fixed on patriotism, virtues or national altruism.

I resist the notion of the need for a Trump loyalty police, but cleaning out civil service obstacles in the bureaucracy has a long, long history.

Maybe Trump ought to establish the Department of Failed Programs and transfer these bad actors into it with the mission of think-tanking their individual paths back out and into the “useful” bureaucracy. It would be like putting all your bad eggs into one basket and carefully watching the basket. Every bureaucracy develops a method to “pass the trash” on to somewhere else. A bureaucracy landfill is just right for these folks.

  12. Hi Heliotrope,
“Can you make that conjecture into something sensible?”

    I’ll try, mate.

Will foreign intelligence services follow advice from .US intelligence sources and refrain from sharing sensitive information with the Trump Administration that they do not want shared inappropriately?

Did President Trump know how sensitive the information was that he declassified? Did his intelligence services share the sources with him?

Also, did President Trump really ask Comey to quash the investigation into Flynn’s activities? Just asking …

  13. Hi Heliotrope and Hanover, another day of everyone with a journalism degree screaming in our ears.””Trump is working with/ for the Russians ” Supposedly Israel is the source of the laptop bomb plots, and Trump told the Russians that.((That is. not exactly a super secret) All of this ignores a policy question.( Which we can’t hear for all of the screaming) Is it in our best interests to have a hostile relationship with Russia? Is it in our best interests for Israel to have a hostile relationship with Russia? I think not to both questions.
