For the past seven years, Steve Tennes and his family have sold their produce at the farmer’s market owned by the city of East Lansing.
But this year – city officials told the devout Catholic family that their blueberries and sweet corn were not welcome at the farmer’s market – and neither were they.
Last year, someone posted a message on Country Mill’s Facebook page inquiring about whether they hosted same-sex weddings at the farm.
Tennes told the individual they did not permit same-sex marriages on the farm because of the family’s Catholic belief that marriage is a sacramental union between one man and one woman.
City officials later discovered the Facebook posting and began immediate action to remove Country Mill from the Farmer’s Market – alleging the family had violated the city’s discrimination ordinance.
The wedding cake fascists aren’t content to dictate to business owners that they must participate in gay marriages regardless of their personal beliefs; they will now monitor your Facebook posts and ban you from participating in commerce on the basis of your personal beliefs. (All in the name of protecting gay people from hurt feelings.)
Scary Times.
Ah, blueberries … when I was 4 years old, I made $35 one Summer picking blueberries. It was my first job. I bought a Kermit the Frog doll at Kmart with my earnings. I was SO proud of myself, and so excited to get a Kermit. With child labour laws now, I couldn’t do the same thing if I was 4 now. 🙁
Now, if that local berry farm wouldn’t host gay marriages … I would probably choose to U-pick/buy my blueberries elsewhere (there are several options back where I’m from, though). I know that some GPers would judge me for this (based on the whole El Coyote debacle of 2008), but I can live with that judgment.
But, if we had a Farmer’s Market owned by the city, and the city decided that they were no longer going to allow the out-of-city-limits berry farm to sell their berries there, it would make me sad, especially if they were already allowed to do for years. Just let them. They look like a nice family.
If I were a vendor at the Farmer’s Market, I would probably wish I didn’t know that this Berry Farm had such a stand on gay marriage. I would prefer not to know a person’s stand on gay marriage. As long as it’s legal and two consenting adults can do it, that’s all I (and Jimmy) care about. I imagine there is a host of places that can and will accommodate gay weddings.
They also sell donuts. Yum. If they were super delicious, I’m not sure I could resist not buying one, if I’m being honest (but I’m a liberal who lacks a consistent moral compass–as I’ve been told on here–so it makes sense).
OK, that reached me. Super cute story 🙂
Thanks for sharing that. Your response reached me. 🙂

Opening in a theater near you!
I’m sure this farm was outside of city limits … so when and how did they violate city laws IN the city? Or is Lansing like NYC, run by Democrats who believe that everybody should adhere to their laws even outside of their jurisdiction?
Another sad day for America. This is a total injustice. America has lost its moral compass. It is no longer the land of the free. Our government tries to control not only actions, but our every thoughts. Who would have thought the country would go down like this?

You just described the progressive SJW’s wet dream. They don’t care what else happens so long as they (0.03% of the population) can walk in public being “who” they are.
The Progressive SJW and the Perpetually Angry Islamic Male have a lot in common which explains many things.
