Rep. Chaffetz is done

After 8 1/2 years of being a rising star in Congress (and sleeping on a cot in his office), Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) is quitting. A few weeks ago, he announced his resignation effective June 30. Sharyl Atkisson has a profile on him.

I’m sorry to see him go. As Chair of the House Oversight Committee, Chaffetz has done a lot of good work to investigate Fast and Furious, the Obama IRS abuses, Hillary’s abuses, and more. I’m a fan of Judicial Watch and time and again, Chaffetz’ face pops up in their stuff as one of the good guys.

He hasn’t given one, overarching reason for quitting. Mainly he keeps it vague, saying it’s a decision that he and his wife made together. Surely the nastiness of Washington has played into their decision, in more than one way.

On a political level, Chaffetz is frustrated with the Trump administration’s lack of transparency and inability to change things:

The reality is, sadly, I don’t see much difference between the Trump administration and the Obama administration. I thought there would be this, these floodgates would open up with all the documents we wanted from the Department of State, the Department of Justice, the Pentagon. In many ways, it’s almost worse, because we’re getting nothing, and that’s terribly frustrating and with all due respect, the [new, Trump] Attorney General [Sessions] has not changed [things] at all. I find him to be worse than what I saw with [Obama AG] Loretta Lynch in terms of releasing documents and making things available. I just, that’s my experience, and that’s not what I expected.

He goes on to characterize Washington Republicans as timid, and to express relief at not having to spend his weekends on political fund-raising anymore.

In defense of President Trump and AG Sessions, one could note the extreme “war zone” atmosphere in Washington at this time, in which the so-called “Trump administration” consists mostly of several thousand Obama holdovers who want to bring down their new President and are doubling down on all their old tricks.

But having noted that, I have to side with Chaffetz. Surely, AG Sessions could intervene with the bureaucracy to release documents that the Obama administration had stonewalled on. And the way forward in Washington is radical transparency: releasing as much information as possible, about as many bureaucratic, legal and political developments as possible.

Trump, and We The People, do not benefit from continuing the old Washington game. In fact, Trump will not survive if he lets it continue; and We The People benefit from smashing it. Smashing it means shining a light on what all the cockroaches, in both parties, have been up to. Thank you, Rep. Chaffetz, for having tried.

  1. I’m a big proponent of the separation of powers which is so all-important in our Republic. Chaffetz whine about transparency is just an excuse for not wanting to be a representative anymore. We only had Congress & no White House for 8 years under Obama so I know we’ve given them way too much credit for actually being something other than what they are. Legislators. Meaningful or useless investigators & hearings holders. They’re not champions. Nobody promised transparency out of the norm that I can remember. Other than standing on the coattails of Lee & Rand, Chaffetz has actually been lackluster to a degree. A big talker. Tight wad & cheap. Did he ever find some other place to sleep other than his office. I doubt it. He’s one of these people willing to sleep on the floor as long as his financial plan back home stays on track. Doesn’t sound like commonsense to me. To top it off he was nearly invisible during the 2016 pres campaign. Whereas as least self-righteous puritan Lee was against Trump, while being a close family friend of Harry Reid. The political dynamics of Utah are quite disappointing. Don’t expect any Einsteins & don’t expect good decisions. Case in point, they pretty much compromised their party platform & threw in with Obama & Obama still seized their land. However; Hatch managed to get the giant airforce base their enlarged & refurbished. As well as getting the government to locate a giant NSA data storage center there. Chaffetz assisted.

  2. (clarification- Lee actually took a stance instead of being the ghost of christmas past in his stance against Trump)

I have no problem with that.

Well, Obama did. (And then failed horribly, at delivering it.)

The point about Trump is that he can only benefit from greater transparency. The more that comes out (about the previous adminsitration’s shenanigans especially – and about Trump’s non-shenanigans, i.e., the fact that there aren’t any), the better for him. It would be a great move.

  4. I meant nobody in Trump’s camp promised transparency though he did criticize Obama for promising it & then not delivering. Separation of powers: One branch doesn’t need to be transparent or submissive to another. However it is a traditional & overused whine by congressmen.

My point that he sleeps on his floor goes to character. Some thing it’s fine. Others do not. I do not.

I briefly returned to my parents district in Utah which Chaffetz represents. He could have done a better job instead of just being the default Republican in a place where only a Republican win, probably the most conservative place in the country. He stayed under the radar, didn’t try to excel, didn’t really stand for anything but the party line. That’s just the way it is.

I bought property in Texas & escaped their milquetoast politics for the last time.

  5. Good riddance to bad rubbish. Chaffetz is a grandstander who leaves his morals behind when he can make a few points with the Establishment.
Case in point: Chaffetz nearly trips over his tongue with effusive praise for Cecile Richardson in the complete whitewash of PP’s baby-part selling scandal. Chaffetz, the SOB, gave PP a free pass and denigrated the CMP (producers of the videos) every chance he got. He can rot in hell for all I’m concerned.

  6. Who is Jason Chaffetz? Is he another Russian spy? Just kidding, I know who he is. I appreciate his frustration, I too want the truth about what happened with all the scandals during the Obama years.It. puzzles me why the Trump administration would stonewall concerning this.
