Sharyl Attkisson nails it

This post started as part 3 in my series this month, “How fake is CNN? At least this fake.” (Most recent entry here.) Because of CNN’s fake Trumprussia story that they had to retract. And because of Project Veritas catching that CNN producer who agrees that CNN’s coverage of Trumprussia is “mostly bullsh*t” with “no proof”.

But V spared me the trouble, with his post earlier. So the news here is that Sharyl Attkisson, the wonderful journalist, has a new book out – The Smear: How Shady Political Operatives and Fake News Control What You See, What You Think, and How You Vote. Here she discusses it with Tucker Carlson:

Attkisson: Democrats, Republicans and the media Establishment have exempted themselves from the normal journalism rules…because they see Donald Trump as such a big threat. They would say, a Hitler-esque threat. That means they don’t have to follow the normal rules of journalism in this case. I think it’s more of a threat to the system of favors, money and access that has been developed [with] the political establishment.

Carlson: So it’s not just a conventional left-right thing, where they’re liberal, Trump is conservative, they hate him. There’s something different going on.

Attkisson: Washington survives on a system…of access and money where people have spent decades paying in to certain politicians, Democrats and Republicans alike, to make sure certain political hearings don’t happen, to make sure certain laws have provisions written in. All of the sudden, overnight, all that access they’ve bought, all the hard work they’ve done as lobbyists and so on, is almost worthless – if Trump’s reality of Washington comes into play. And nobody seems to like that.

…I liken it to the situations that must be in North Korea. If you have a TV and can watch the news, it’s gonna be a version that’s approved and put out by the State. In some respects, we are getting an artificial reality created by people putting out narratives…If you’re like me, there’s very little that I see reported on the news that I instantly believe without doing my own checking because so many formerly-reputable news organizations have been proven to be 180 degress wrong, not just a little bit wrong… reporters doing things that wouldn’t be allowed in journalism school, but doing them now with impunity.

  1. The local Progressive newspaper is completely silent on the CNN lies. Also, the number of Trump/Russia articles has gone from 22,890 per day to about 3.

  2. I was recently involved in a discussion regarding the climate of hateful rhetoric and whether it leads some people to engage in physical harm. The guy I was arguing with insisted that Republicans are just as guilty (“Both the left and the right do it…”, “Republicans started this whole thing with Bill Clinton and the politics of personal destruction…”, etc.). When Attkisson repeatedly states that this is the fault of “Democrats and Republicans alike”, she is engaging in the very thing her book is supposedly exposing and criticizing and I can only assume she’s trying to sell her book with the widest political appeal because if she were more honest, it would be greeted as a right-wing hit piece on the media. Are there those on the right who engage in editorializing, narrative, and agenda-pushing? Sure but is is nothing compared to what the left has been doing since the Progressive Era, around 1900. Walter Cronkite’s nightly, pious screeds (I don’t remember them as I was far too young) and the trifecta of Tom Brokaw, Peter Jennings, and Dan Rather are examples of the Big Three networks prior to cable and Internet news. Now it’s everywhere because media is everywhere. This phenomenon isn’t new at all though it is far more intense and pervasive today and it is virtually one-sided. I’m surprised Carlson doesn’t call her on it.

  3. I agree that, in terms of the climate of hateful rhetoric and the political violence, yes it has been (and always was) more the Left than the Right.

In terms of Attkisson’s interview with Carlson, I think she was talking about something else: the influence-peddling and also, the manipulation of “the news” in the newsrooms as such. (Apart from the editorial/commentary aspect.) Kill this story, enhance that other story, maybe fake a story, all to manipulate the voting public. Manipulating not with commentary, but with which stories are known (or believed or commented upon) to begin with. Key quote:

Washington survives on a system…of access and money where people have spent decades paying in to certain politicians, Democrats and Republicans alike, to make sure certain political hearings don’t happen, to make sure certain laws have provisions written in.

“to make sure certain political hearings” happen or don’t happen – that would be one example of manipulating what story appears or doesn’t appear in “the news”.

There again, I will grant you that Democrats do it more, better and longer (in history) than Republicans. But it is both; or at least, the DC Establishment of both.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to her book.

  4. The other day I had a big long think, correlating what I can see coming out of the Democrat Media with the bile-laced arguments & attacks from the civilian Left in threads around the net, on facebook & Twitter. The world that the deranged Left (not normal Democrats who understand they lost the election & are bitter but silent) thinks exist; is very much akin to what is happening in Venezuela. With an isolated president (he’s not) despised by the rest of the planet & citizenry that’s being killed, starved & demolished.

This is what the Democrat Media Complex has wrought. At least a third of the Left’s half of the country that think everyone’s on the brink with another third of the Left’s half using them in an attempt to unseat a president of the US.

    I think you misread Attkinson:

Washington survives on a system…of access and money where people have spent decades paying in to certain politicians, Democrats and Republicans alike, to make sure certain political hearings don’t happen, to make sure certain laws have provisions written in.

She is talking about the “establishment”: professional politicians in the Democrat party, professional politicians in the Republican Party, and the media. Attkinson goes on to say:

All of the sudden, overnight, all that access they’ve bought, all the hard work they’ve done as lobbyists and so on, is almost worthless – if Trump’s reality of Washington comes into play. And nobody seems to like that.

    You wonder:

Are there those on the right who engage in editorializing, narrative, and agenda-pushing? Sure but is is nothing compared to what the left has been doing since the Progressive Era,…

Here is were I disagree with you. The establishment Republicans and the establishment Republican media have chosen too often to go-along-to-get-along, to reach-across-the-aisle” and to insist that they can not make changes without holding the Presidency and Congress.

Well, establishment Republicans and the Never-Trumpsters among you, we gave you full control and now you can’t quite seem to summon up the MOXIE to take the bull by the tail and face yourselves and and your comfy, high dollar sinecure.

At least Harry Reid had the MOXIE to force the Senate to stay in session as Christmas Day loomed in order to beat the Obamacare charade out of them.

Attkinson is reporting accurately, in my view. Very accurately. We are war with the DemonizingRats. We will have to take our Risks at Bataan, Anzio, D-Day, and the Bulge. Or we can sit in the pentagon and throw spit balls at Viet Nam or we can go the Obama route and announce withdrawals half a year in advance or we can unend Qaddafi and let Libya shatter into chaos. It is our “plan” to develop.

Attkinson is telling us that the “establishment” can not see beyond their own noses and Trump is pulling the crony capitalism rug out from under the establishment and that scares the living be-Jesus out them. Democrats and Republicans. Just look at the McCain and Grahamnesty twins for example.
