New Crisis, Same Old Progressives

If you go to YouTube and search “Don’t be fuelish,” you’ll come across a cache of public service announcements from 1974, warning Americans that the world was running out of oil. In one of them, a little blond kid stands in the torch of the Statue of Liberty, lamenting that all of the oil is going to be used up by the time he goes to college. Kid looks to be 9 or 10 years old. So, basically, he was worried that all the world’s supply of fuel would be used up by 1985.

The solution proposed by progressives in 1974 was the same as they are pushing forty years later as a response to “Global Warmening”; stop using fossil fuels, restrict individual liberty (Remember how the speed limit used to be 55 MPH because we needed to conserve energy?), embiggen Government. And the tactics were exactly the same… threaten people with DOOM! unless the progressive scheme was implemented. (“Think of the children! Won’t someone think of the children!”) Oh, and they also used actors to push their message.

Just something to ponder as Global Warming Scientician Michael Mann faces contempt of court charges for refusing to release the data he used to come up with the infamous “hockey stick graph” that supposedly demonstrates inevitable Global Warmening Doom unless we …. stop using fossil fuels, restrict individual liberty, and embiggen Government.

It’s known that, as Europe imports masses of (mostly-male) Muslim immigrants, crime rates go up. A lot. European authorities try to hide it in the statistics, but they can’t hide it completely.

Swedish police are no longer allowed to describe the ethnic background of the criminals they catch…the German government and press were desperate to cover up hundreds sexual assaults that occurred in Cologne in 2015.

However, there are certain statistics that can’t be covered up. A government can try to conceal the connection between crimes and specific ethnic groups, but they can’t cover up the overall crime statistics of an entire city…

…the German government recently revealed that more than half of the population of Frankfurt has a foreign background…49% of people with foreign backgrounds in Frankfurt live below the poverty line, compared to 23% of native Germans, and they are significantly more likely to be unemployed…

…[and] Frankfurt am Main rates as the most dangerous city in Germany with 16,292 crimes per 100,000 people.

Perhaps that is why Bill Gates, the famous philanthropist, recently told a German magazine that Europe will be devastated by African refugees (meaning north Africans / Muslims) if they don’t do something:

“On the one hand you want to demonstrate generosity and take in refugees, but the more generous you are, the more word gets around about this – which in turn motivates more people to leave Africa.”

While Germany has been one of the pioneers of the open door policy, it cannot “take in the huge, massive number of people who are wanting to make their way to Europe.”

Thus Gates advised European nations to take action in order to make it “more difficult for Africans to reach the continent via the current transit routes.”

Which means, I think, having the Spanish, French, Italian and Greek navies interdict refugee ships on the Mediterranean. And/or shutting down the NGOs who finance them.

UPDATE – It begins: A center-left leader in Italy calls for an end to Italy accepting Muslim refugees.

“We need to free ourselves from a sense of guilt. We do not have the moral duty to welcome into Italy people who are worse off than ourselves,” Renzi wrote in new book…”There has to be a fixed number of arrivals,” he said, adding that Italy should help migrants in their home countries.

Yup.

Evidence of Trump-Russia collusion?

Trump and Putin shake hands at the G20 meeting

At this meeting, they reached a Syria cease-fire agreement.

HAMBURG — A cease-fire agreement reached Friday between the United States and Russia is intended to quell fighting in southwest Syria and allow anti-government rebels there to focus on the Islamic State, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said…

The fighting has caused an estimated 500,000 deaths and displaced nearly half of Syria’s pre-war population of 22 million people.

In case it needs spelling out: The cease-fire is a good thing, and this post’s title is parody.

Raise your hand if you are old enough to remember when Democrats liked peace, said things like “Politics stops at the water’s edge”, and thought that it would be good if the world’s top two nuclear powers (Russia and the U.S.) could find ways to get along.

I’m old enough to remember when the Soviet Union existed and the U.S. needed to fight their aggressive communism. And I remember that the Soviet Union ended, and that Islam became a threat – to gays especially.

UPDATE: Photo session where France’s Macron shoves his way through, to stand next to President Trump. Macron starts at the viewer’s upper right; Trump lower left.

It made me laugh. I’m not sure why. I did get an impression of a puppy scrambling to be next to the alpha dog. Merkel tracks Macron anxiously; almost like he was supposed to stand next to her? Anyway, it’s a contrast to that famous photo where Obama stood alone with The Wives.

CNN led the cheerleading for Hillary in 2016. That turned out to be B.S. Then CNN led the Trumprussia collusion story in 2017. That was also B.S., with CNN having to retract more than one story and fire more than one employee.

Then we had the Project Veritas videos of CNN employees calling their own employer’s Trumprussia coverage “B.S.” and a “nothing burger” that was done to “spike the ratings”, and calling the American voter – in other words, their own audience – “stupid as sh*t”. And this week, we had the spectacle of CNN – a $20 billion company – using its vast resources to intimidate a private citizen whose meme they didn’t like. And gloating about it.

And yesterday, CNN spread more fake news about a non-existent snubbing of President Trump. (Check out the video. Another nothing burger. Can you believe they spend time on such crap?)

As CNN’s self-destruction proceeds, their ratings have begun to drop. If you prefer your news in the form of visual memes, this might give you the idea:

The real minimum wage is $0

A week ago, Zero Hedge reported on a study that Seattle’s minimum wage law is costing workers their income and jobs.

…boosting pay in low-wage jobs by about 3 percent since 2014 but also resulting in a 9 percent reduction in hours worked in such jobs. That resulted in a 6 percent drop in what employers collectively pay…

The report also estimated that there are about 5,000 fewer low-wage jobs in the city than there would have been…

But St. Louis workers face better times. The Missouri legislature passed a pre-emption law to invalidate that city’s hike.

Preemption laws are becoming increasingly popular in GOP-controlled states as cities – typically bastions of liberal sentiment – try to raise minimum wages above statewide minimum levels…

…at least 17 states have preemption laws that stand in the way of local minimum wage legislation, according to a recent study by the National League of Cities…

Sadly, MO Governor Eric Greitens, who is a gun-toting conservative hunk of delicious beefcake, was less-than-bold about it:

Fearing the political backlash…Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens wouldn’t affix his signature to the bill; Missouri’s constitution stipulates that bills that go unsigned by the governor automatically become law.

What happens in general, when wages go up too far, too fast? China has the answer.

Manufacturers, squeezed by rising labor costs and a paucity of skilled workers, are fueling an unprecedented boom in the adoption of automated technologies to cut down on the number of workers needed on factory floors, according to the latest findings of the China Employer-Employee Survey.

Ironically, the Communist Party’s willingness to support unprofitable businesses is compounding problems for Chinese workers, as many manufacturers are barely profitable to begin with.

Remember that video of China’s parcel-sorting robots? Or, closer to home, we could talk about McDonald’s replacing its cashiers with kiosks.
