Democrat Logic

Illinois is losing people and businesses because of its highest-in-the-region tax burden. So, their solution is to raise taxes on the remaining people and businesses to offset the lost revenue.

All righty then.

    They have state income taxes on top of the other taxes. So where does the cash go? Would an army of Federal Auditors be helpful? Illinois has the worst taxes in the country.

    “Illinois is considered financially the worst state in the nation. Despite being the most-taxed state, with an average state and local bill of $7,836, the state did not have a budget for over 700 days and racked up a backlog of $15 billion in unpaid bills.”

    “The Democrats overrode Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto of a 32 percent hike of personal income taxes from 3.75 percent to 4.95 percent, which is expected to generate about $4.3 billion; and a 33 percent increase of the corporate tax rate from 5.25 percent to 7 percent, which is expected to generate another 460 million. But the Democrats then raised earned income for the poor, and reinstated tax credits for research and development.”

    Sorry, V, if I’m repeating some of your already shown stats.

    I have a better idea, four-fold:

    1) they start printing their own money;
    2) if #1 isn’t enough, they keep printing more;
    3) if #2 isn’t enough, they go back to raising “the fair share” a little more;
    4) if #3 isn’t enough, they go to #2.

    That’ll do it.

    Should I mention I defended my PhD in macro-econ before Mrs. Janet Yellen?

    Unfortunately, it happens all the time with government agencies.

    The MTA raised fares back in the 1980s because ridership was down.

    The BMV raised rates on vanity plates in 2008 because fewer people were renewing them.

    These people need a lesson in supply and demand.

    The part that I would be most angry about is making the income tax hike retroactive to January 1, as if it is my fault they can’t use their money wisely, so I have to be punished for their stupidity. And I assume they believe these hikes will make folks happy and thankful? Yeesh

    These people need a lesson in supply and demand.

    Observably true, although, prior to that, them getting back, also, some sort of a functioning brain, is a hard prerequisite, IMHO — well, I assume it would help, anyway.

    If I had stumbled upon this classic meme after highschool 30-something years ago, pre-World Wide Interwebs,

    I swear I would have said, “ok, it’s geared towards giving a 12 year old kid some clue, at the most, okay,”

    But,

    I swear, also, I would have been light years away of imagining it would be STILL completely out of reach of econ genius baby boomer administrators’ understanding 30 years later.

    Illinois has three problems:

    1. grossly inefficient gov’t organization (e.g. almost 7,000 taxing authorities)
    2. over-compensated public employees (see pensions)
    3. population unable and/or unwilling to pay for the gov’t they vote for

    What happens next is that people from IL, fleeing their train wreck of a state, will (as with CA refugees) move to a less-insane state and begin demanding the same policies that work so well in IL.

    KCRob, the people that CAN flee, like me in a few years, tend to be the more conservative ones that have their votes overridden by Chicago. I have 2 relatives that have left already (conservatives) , and one more set that will be leaving next year when his job posting is up. I have to wait until In-laws pass before I can get wife to leave, but with their health issues, will be soon. There are a lot of conservative areas in Illinois, we are just outnumbered by the city. You are right about 1 and 2, but I would qualify #3 just a bit.

    I grew up in Illinois. I have a large number of relatives still living in the state. Every single one of them have voted demorat for decades. I left in the early 80’s. Everyone of them blame the state economic woes on the current Republican governor. They earned their situation. I have no sympathy for them.

    A good number of people will stay in Illinois until they closer to retirement, then sayonara. Their only issue might be selling a house where the population is stagnating.

    Or maybe we are just the complete idiots here, and their actual plan consists in that the last man/woman standing in Illinois eventually pays taxes only to support his/her own welfare?

    Now, that’d be genius.

    Kinda boring and wasting a bit, space-wise, but still —

    At least Illinois is still reporting data —
