A Safari user or two kindly informed us that the GP comment section was causing a popup message something like “Your iPad has been chosen to win a $1,000.00 gift card.”
Yesterday they did some work on the blog. So, I’m hoping that would be cleaned up. If you saw the message previously, please let us know if you still see it (after running Apple’s or Safari’s version of local cleanup – I would not know what that is). Thanks!
I have been getting pop up messages for several months whenever I go into the comments section of GP articles. They are always for different things. Today they seem to be adds for Pfaltzgraff Dinnerware, Burg Simpson Workers Comp Lawyers, Expert CFO Support and HP Net App. It has really been annoying, but I didn’t know what to do about them.
Sorry about that. If you still see the problem, then I guess yesterday’s work did not take care of it. I will forward your comment.
Question – do you use Safari?
For those that are having this issue, might I suggest using Chrome or Firefox (with the NoScript extension installed) when using blog sites. I’ve never seen the referenced pop-ups on GP when using either of those browsers.
At the very least, you may wish to look at your pop-up settings on the browser you are currently seeing these messages with. The current versions of Safari, IE, and Edge allow you to customize these, either blocking entirely or using whitelists. Now that the separate comments pop-up no longer works on GP, this shouldn’t impair basic functionality of the site.
I don’t know if this is useful information, but I’ve been finding GP difficult to use on my phone (the browser on there is Safari) lately. Difficult to comment (though, I think that makes a lot of people here happy, lol). I think it has something to do with the ads, for some reason (they seem to be more pronounced and get in the way).
I use Chrome on my laptop, and have much less issues.
Also, while I’m at it, I’ve always found the social media icons under each post to slow things down a bit.
Anyway, that’s all I have.
What’s wrong with online advertisers? I’m perfectly fine with people hosting ads to earn a little money for their blogs provided the ads aren’t intrusive.
I feel bad for running an ad blocker (which is a bit too aggressive) but not bad enough to want to suffer the pop-ups, pop-behinds, redirects, and stalled scripts.
I think a lot of web site owners aren’t aware what ad hosting companies are slipping a lot more crap into the ad stream.
Who would have thought that irritating people was the road to riches? It must be since it goes on.
I think I’ve only seen the ad ILC mentioned on my iPhone (Safari).
ILC–I do use Safari on my phone and IPad and they both have the Block Pop Ups tab activated so I’m not sure why I see pop up ads.
Still there
Promotefine.com even after cleaning safari
3times while trying to comment thus short replies
Still happening. The page changes to “promotefine.com” I can hit the back arrow and get back to GP, but I have to click on comments again.
For those of you having problems, is it better, worse, or about the same when you load just the blog post page individually (instead of the comments link)?
So for this page, does loading:

in a separate tab or window still produce the same annoyances?
For those of you using iOS devices, I strongly recommend installing Chrome for iOS or Opera/Opera Mini for iOS.
Also, for those of you experiencing problems, clearing your cache and cookies might be helpful. (Good to do on a regular basis, also.)
