SPLC continues to destroy itself (along with others)

The Southern Poverty Law Center was, perhaps, once a civil rights organization. Then extremists spent its core assets – in this case, SPLC’s good word and reputation – until they were gone. SPLC now routinely mislabels conservative and/or Christian groups as so-called “hate groups”, emptying the term of meaning and making the SPLC a bad joke.

Most famously, SPLC mislabelled the Family Research Council a “hate group” for its stance against gay marriage, and in 2013 that prompted an attempted mass-murder by a gay activist, Floyd Lee Corkins II.

SPLC is still going. Most recently, they mislabelled the D. James Kennedy Ministries:

I’m sure to oppose much of the rhetoric and positions of the DJKM, the FRC and others. Heck, I may even think they’re stupid and wrong, while I’m right. But they aren’t hate groups, until and unless they’re inciting physical violence and/or condoning criminals. And they aren’t.

The DJKM plan to fight back with a defamation suit. It will be interesting to see how it goes. I expect it to fail; “that’s our opinion” is a workable defense in many instances, and many in the law profession have a blind spot for the SPLC.

But I didn’t think Trump would win, either. The SPLC seems to assert as fact that the DJKM promotes “hate”. The SPLC’s claims then get repeated by the official media (minus Fox). DJKM lawyers will have to define objectively what it is to promote “hate”, then get the court to evaluate SPLC’s claims and intentions there. Who knows, they just might?

  1. I’ve always been wary of defamation lawsuits (see Mark Steyn’s ongoing 5+ year purgatory over a mild blog post) but there needs to be some point at which the likes of the $PLC should be held accountable for what, in these days, is a blood libel.

As with everything else the left touches, “hate” has been made useless.

  2. The DNC is a hate group. It satisfies every definition of such.

  3. To the SPLC, moderate Republicans are a hate group. This so called racist civil rights group is about as left as Communists. While many liberal organizations used to be fair although wrong in many of their views, they are now socialists and communists (as they think liberals are really moderates now).

  5. It’s all about money, if they were a reasonable group they wouldn’t generate the headlines they need to promote their funding drives. When the organization was formed it was dong legitimate work but now it has benn taken over by “true believers” who will not tolerate any opinion that differs from their own. If they really believed that any religious organization that did not believe in gay marriage or transgenderism, they would have to label many black churches and Islam as hate groups and that would not be PC.

  6. I suspect that if you look at what DJKM actually says that you will be turned off by very little to none of it. This is the culmination (so far) of over reach by labeling anyone who disagrees however mildly, with the Left as a ‘hate group’ .
I know of people who have taken SPLC’s designation with pride – to them it means they are making enough of a difference that the Left is paying attention to them.
many of the groups that they designate as hate groups’ and ‘anti-LGBT’ are good honest traditional people doing their best to keep marriages from falling apart with a message of love and service: but since they don’t actively promote LGBT positions, they must be ‘hate’. I’m sure if the SPLC knew about me, they’d label me a ‘hate group’!

  7. Self-appointed, self-important arbiters of what’s hate or not. Who cares what they designate, as anything other than a subjective opinion. SPLC should have no more import than that.
