Frustrated Liberal Concludes Gun Control Policies Don’t Work

In a rare moment of honesty on the left, a left-wing statistician went through the evidence scientifically and without bias and came to the conclusion that none of the left-wing’s favored policies would put a dent in gun deaths.

Before I started researching gun deaths, gun-control policy used to frustrate me. I wished the National Rifle Association would stop blocking common-sense gun-control reforms such as banning assault weapons, restricting silencers, shrinking magazine sizes and all the other measures that could make guns less deadly.

Then, my colleagues and I at FiveThirtyEight spent three months analyzing all 33,000 lives ended by guns each year in the United States, and I wound up frustrated in a whole new way. We looked at what interventions might have saved those people, and the case for the policies I’d lobbied for crumbled when I examined the evidence. The best ideas left standing were narrowly tailored interventions to protect subtypes of potential victims, not broad attempts to limit the lethality of guns.

It’s like us Right-Wing Nut Jobs were saying all along. The policies of the left will fail, and may perhaps even be designed to fail so that their failure will make the case for ever increasing levels of gun control leading ultimately to what the left actually wants: to outlaw the private ownership of firearms.

By the way, the correlation between gun ownership and homicides is actually inverse.

There are actually two policies that would make a difference, but they are politically unpalatable to the Progressive Left.

The majority of gun deaths in the USA are suicides – about two-thirds of all of them, in fact. However, current left-wing Dogma is that people who want to commit suicide should not be only allowed to, but the State should actively assist them.

The great majority of the gun homicides in the USA are committed by young male criminals in urban areas. The Democrats who run these urban areas are loathe to crack down on this violence for fear of riling “community activists” who claim that stopping young urban males from committing crimes is a conspiracy to re-enact slavery via the “Prison Industrial Complex.”

So, for whatever reason, the only “politically palatable” solutions involve restricting the rights of non-criminal people to possess lawful means of self-defense. They don’t work, but they make leftists feel empowered.

  1. “but they make leftists feel empowered.”

Progressives love to stereotype gun owners. They HATE their stereotypical gun owner : conservative, country music fan, rural, male, white.

The Progressive push for gun control has zero to do with saving lives, it is all about using the government to “stick it to” gun owners.

  2. Two “dishonest” data-variables also distort the truth. (surprise, surprise!!)

    1. “Children” for statistical purposes are anyone 25-and-younger*.
    2. Those killed or injured in military service here or overseas are counted as “gun violence victims”, and included.

[*- Most rational persons would only count those under 16 or 17 as children. In our courts “adults” can be those as young as 14.]

  3. Ted B., has changed the definition mass shootings. The major change, it the shooter is killed or injured in the shooting, the “count” ticks up.

Heck, parents are allowing 5 year old “children” to change their genders. They are allowing 12 year “children” to mutilate their bodies with chemicals. But, a 22 year old shot in a gang shoot out is a “child”.

Progressives on here dismiss the slippery slope and the constant Progressive dishonesty.

  4. I like to ask leftists if they would be ok with requiring the same to vote as you do to buy a gun.

But seriously the fired CBS lawyer & the Chicago griller can figure out why an ANTI-TRUMP pussy hat wearing protester with a brown foreign moslem girlfriend shot up hundreds of TRUMP voters but not fake news.

  5. News Flash: I think more and more people on The Left (including myself) have thrown in the towel. Have your f*cking guns.

  6. @CCP: Why? Because you realize your anecdotal, emotion-based arguments are contradicted by cold hard data?

  7. The facts NEVER jibe with the Left’s worldview, thus their constant barrage of lies and misrepresentation. The truth to a Dem is like sunlight to a vampire.

  11. 10. CCP, it ain’t over. There are lots of aspects of gun rights that need to be restored.

  12. The left will never stop trying to take away our civil liberties and human rights; it is their nature.

  13. Another data variable is that justifiable shootings (e.g., a bank robber shot by police in a gunfight) are included along with the accidents, murders, and suicides. So the “victims of gun violence” include Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Abdul Razik Ali Artan, and Tamerlan Tsarnaev.

Also, when a woman shoots her ex-husband or ex-boyfriend after he breaks into her apartment and lunges at her with an ax, it gets counted as “gun violence” or “domestic violence” rather than as a justified act of self-defense. Which is how the anti-gun groups cook up their statistics saying that you are 43 times more likely to shoot a family member than a burglar.

  14. The left will never stop trying

And you will never stop complaining even though they have a snowball’s chance of Hell of making any real progress. Congratulations! You won!

  15. Using census and DOJ data, this blogger has worked this out:

Black men aged 20-24 comprised over 14% of all arrests for murders last year*. Black men in that age range make up less than half of one percent of the total population. That means they are over 3,450% as likely to be arrested for murder as the rest of the population is.

While this guy’s idea on “solutions” are a bit out of the mainstream (I’m being nice), the numbers don’t lie.

If people in the policy biz wanted to be useful, they’d consider these numbers and see what can be devised in the way of a solution. For instance, what about the culture these guys grow up in makes murder an attractive option?

Blaming guns and white males is much easier and satisfying to unserious people consumed with hate for “normals”.

  16. I said it before and it bears repeating, if you think there are a lot of murders without gun control wait until you see how many murders there are with gun control. I cite Nazi Germany and communist Russia as examples.
since 1994 gun ownership has increased by 56% murders have dropped 41%. how many murders are committed by nra members compared to members of the welfare state raised in Hillary’s village? I think some politicians need to stop demonizing the nra and look in the mirror to see the person that created this horrible village that exists in an otherwise lovely country. and those politicians created that village for pure political power.

  17. It still boils down to “reasonable gun control” being …two-rounds into the center of body-mass.

  18. I’m with Harry Browne.

“I say that the second amendment doesn’t allow for exceptions – or else it would have read that the right “to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed, unless Congress chooses otherwise.” And because there are no exceptions, I disagree with my fellow panelists who say the existing gun laws should be enforced. Those laws are unconstitutional and wrong – because they put you at a disadvantage against armed criminals, to whom the laws are no inconvenience.”

  19. What is amazing CrayCrayPatriot is that so many are not going to give you what you want to acknowledge. Nothing is going to stop America’s love affair with guns. I agree. There is no act, no matter how heinous that will make gun control possible. The task of “normalizing” bearing in open carry is proceeding a pace, and I expect that we will eventually get back to the time of the Wild West, the high tide of the second amendment.

Then, when we have another perp firing from a hotel window, there will be return fire from citizen groups who will use area fire with their rifles to try and suppress such crazies–and people in hotel rooms around the gunmen will likely die, since the fog of war will make it difficult if not impossible to know exactly where the perp is and what is going on–collateral damage that unfortunately occurred in bringing the perp(s) to gunslinging justice. And so it goes.

  20. “the time of the Wild West,”

This is a myth brought to you by Hollywood.

    That wasn’t a thoughtful statement.

Most likely the shooter choose this particular hotel for location and the fact that hotel disarmed the security force in 2012. Security was outside his hotel room but couldn’t do anything. The church shooter in Charleston had originally targeted a Black college but once he saw the campus police were armed, he found a Gun Free Zone.

Like other anti-gun nuts, you discount the deterrent effect of the possibility of someone with a gun in the area. Why do you think most mass shootings are in Gun Free Zones?

For instance, fire up a search engine and compare the incidents of sexual assaults on campuses with and without concealed carry.

For a crowd of people who pretend to deal in science and facts, anti-gun Progressives miss the boat by a wide mile on this issue.
