The Hoax that Is TrumpRussia

It’s always the same pattern: Big Splashy CNN headlines followed weeks later by an inconspicuous debunking of the Big Splashy Headline.

That story followed on the heels of another CNN “exclusive” about how “Russian-linked Facebook ads targeted Michigan and Wisconsin.”

This story began: “A number of Russian-linked Facebook ads specifically targeted Michigan and Wisconsin, two states crucial to Donald Trump’s victory last November, according to four sources with direct knowledge of the situation.”

It went on: “Some of the Russian ads appeared highly sophisticated in their targeting of key demographic groups in areas of the states that turned out to be pivotal.”

Had CNN finally found evidence that Russia tried, and might have succeeded, in swinging the election for Trump?

It was up to the Washington Examiner’s Byron York to provide the relevant facts and context.

He found that of the 3,000 Russian ads that Facebook turned over to Congress, most of them ran after the election and so could hardly be part of any “meddling.” The vast majority didn’t mention the election or any candidate. A quarter of them weren’t seen by anybody.

What’s more, out of those 3,000 ads, only a tiny handful targeted Michigan and Wisconsin, nearly all of them ran in 2015 — well before Trump was nominated — and most had fewer than 1,000 impressions.

In other words, there was nothing to justify CNN’s treatment of the story.

On the other hand, there is some evidence that the Obama Administration and Hillary Clinton were taking bribes from Russia.

They also obtained an eyewitness account — backed by documents — indicating Russian nuclear officials had routed millions of dollars to the U.S. designed to benefit former President Bill Clinton’s charitable foundation during the time Secretary of State Hillary Clinton served on a government body that provided a favorable decision to Moscow, sources told The Hill.

The racketeering scheme was conducted “with the consent of higher level officials” in Russia…

Rather than bring immediate charges in 2010, however, the Department of Justice (DOJ) continued investigating the matter for nearly four more years, essentially leaving the American public and Congress in the dark about Russian nuclear corruption on U.S. soil during a period when the Obama administration made two major decisions benefitting Putin’s commercial nuclear ambitions.

  1. I wondered what that was all about but was too distracted by life to remember to look see. Thank you V, for explaining.

The Left is beyond desperate now & even the Democrats have dropped the Russia thing though the Democrat Media still has the pin up board option of Russia/Russia/Russia as an option on a slow news day or for busy work for a new hire.

Try reminding the Left that Russia has been attacking the US every year since the end of WWII & you get a blank stare. Listing the last administration’s collusion with Russia doesn’t work either.

  2. This is kind of related-
The UK news co., BBC news, is throwing huge headlines around about how-

1] [the 1960s, Indonesian government] was doing illegal killings of thousands of communists, and others, and that the [heartless], “US govt. knew about it, and did nothing”.

I’m very sorry to hear about that. I wish that the govt. had protested Indonesia’s, 1960s govt.’s illegal actions.

But do you notice- in the past 10 years, when BBC, and many other UK news groups, report on some [US Govt. illegal actions, and failures to stop crimes by the US Govt.’s allies]-

they DON’T say a word about The UK govt.’s mistreatment of people in India before the 1940s, or [The UK govt.’s mistreatment of people in Northern Ireland].

Please do us a favor, BBC news-

You worry about, and work on, the mistakes and crimes in your nation’s past, and

-we will worry about, and work on, the mistakes and crimes in [our nation’s] past.

As everyone knows- honest critiques are usually the type of critiques that people need.

  4. So TR, leftists always say America is a horrible, racist, evil, and imperialistic country. They complain that not only does the US sticks its nose in everyone else’s business and needs to stop acting like the world police, but we plunder and steal the resources from countries we are purportedly helping.. Yet, then they scream that America needs to “do something” when it comes to their pet causes like Darfur, etc. Liberalism is a mental disorder.

  8. Ah, the ol’ “fart in the elevator” story. You know, you pass a silent one and when it really starts to stink you sniff, look around very accusingly at two or three other people and huff indignantly as you exit the elevator. Not to trivialize what’s going on with the swamp critters in Washington but if they start pointing fingers and screeching you better look carefully in their direction and see what it is they are covering up.

  9. Tucker Carlson Tonight did a pretty decent job covering this on Tuesday’s show, including the featuring of an interview with Glenn Greenwald, who has been particularly critical of the coverage. While noting that “we otherwise don’t agree on much”, TC stated that GG’s analysis of this particular matter was spot-on, which is to say that outlets like CNN run with breathless coverage of any possible form of Trump-Russia collusion and then when it’s determined to be baseless, say nothing and move on to something else until the next allegation comes along. GG noted that there is very little traditional shoe-leather journalism going on these days and that it’s mostly people who formulate stories based on social media and online rumors by those who might otherwise be dwelling in Mom’s basement [the latter being my characterization, not his actual words].

Meanwhile, the second part of the blog post, the Russia connection between high level members of the Obama Administration etc, has largely gone unreported and is routinely dismissed on social media as “a lie”. And all of CNN bristles when they keep getting labeled as “Fake News”.

On a side note, I notice that CBS This Morning is now promoting itself with the tagline “Real News”. This brings to mind the old line about “If you have to keep saying it, it probably isn’t true.”

  10. RSG, Your last paragraph reminds of the people who say, “Let me be honest with you.” That instills lots of confidence doesn’t it?

You could tell as soon as the Progressives were screaming, “Russia, Russia, Russia” is was a fake battle cry.

I bet Mrs. Clinton wet her Depends when a special prosecutor was appointed to investigate the Russia Connection.
