  1. So, as it turns out, Dick’s was a prescient name.

  2. Thanks for the chuckle. And clearly Dick’s management are screwing themselves by this choice.

  3. I don’t know why we keep gossiping about these things — haven’t we learned yet about today’s version of progress?

Con – sis – ten – cy, people!

Shame gun owners when you sell guns.

Empower womyn with the customs of men who treat them as pieces of furniture — which is fine, as long as said men aren’t straight white males with more of a thing for the rule of law and individual responsibility rather than attending Linda Verysour’s wokeness events.

Teach toddlers how to identify as your latest whims, then 20 years later tell them about their paramount right to demand forgiveness for student loans they signed up for like there’d be no tomorrow without a “social contract” (but never mind getting any skills beyond Snapchat or BuzzFeed forums).

    Etc, etc.

  4. C’mon. Be woke or get your yoke, folks!

  5. So, as it turns out, Dick’s was a prescient name.

Ironically so, yes. It’s the first name of the founder. Too bad he wasn’t prescient enough to see the value in changing the name to something more generic as soon as they started to expand beyond their native New York state. At least they might be the butt of jokes for something other than their name.

The current execs seem to be spending too much time in Pittsburgh [current headquarters] and Philadelphia, yet those places aren’t where their sales or growth is. It’s more in places like Pennsyltucky. They seem to have made a calculated move to appease the gun-grabbers and appeal to soccer moms. Yet soccer moms and beta dads already have plenty of places from which to buy baseball gloves, trackwear, and tailgating equipment, particularly in suburbia. Meanwhile, firearms are still huge in the places that voted for Donald Trump. If I had stock in DSG, I’d sell the next time it surged. At least spirits are high in the offices of Bass Pro Shops/Cabela’s. If the current trajectory continues, they will soon be the only multiline national retailer of firearms.

    Linda Verysour??

    Oh, wait…

    Nicely done. 🙂

  7. @5 ah well, what’s in a name anyway?

L’Angleterre, c’est un pays extraordinaire! Tandis qu’en France nous donnons à nos rues des noms de victoires, Wagram, Austerlitz…, là-bas, on leur colle des noms de défaites, Trafalgar Square, Waterloo Place… !

England, that’s an extraordinary country! While in France we give our streets the names of victories, Wagram, Austerlitz…, over there, they give them the names of defeats, Trafalgar Square, Waterloo Place… !

  8. Even if you don’t patronize Dick’s, don’t forget they own the GolfGalaxy chain as-well. “No more golf balls for you! …Go wedge yourself“. Anathema.

  11. Richfield Minnesota has one of the biggest Dick’s in the country, but other sporting good retailers have struggled here. It’ll be interesting to see if they last.

  12. What a brilliant business & political strategy: alienating & demonizing an organization with almost 6 Million Members (all of whom vote and have buying power)!

There are some places that only seem to be able to support one “category killer”. When purveyors of books had such outlets, I would notice, when traveling around, that there were some areas where there only seemed to be a Barnes & Noble, or a Borders, or a unit of a smaller, regional company, like Hastings. Then there were other locales that had all three. It didn’t seem to be based on anything objective, like population size (generally speaking) or presumed income or education level. Nor even on the condition of the store/s itself. That phenomenon would make a good business school study.
