Irwin Schiff, R.I.P.

This past week, we had news that Irwin Schiff passed away on October 16. Schiff was a U.S. veteran, author, heroic income-tax protestor and, sadly, a U.S. political prisoner.

Big Government advocates will sometimes claim that the U.S. tax system is voluntary. They say it because they want to deny the obvious: that government is force (by its nature, it operates by forcing people against their will) – and that, as advocates of Big Government, they do basically want a dictatorial, regimented society.

I’ve seen lefties making the “voluntary” claim in GP comments. But as a stronger example, here is Democrat leader Harry Reid saying, “Our system of government is a voluntary tax system…We have a voluntary system.” Because, says Reid, if you don’t pay taxes in the U.S., “You don’t go to jail.”

That “voluntary” claim is nonsense, in practice. Some people, such as Eric Garner in 2014, are hounded by the police for selling untaxed cigarettes and then fatally assaulted by the police. Others like Gilbert Hyatt may be hounded by State authorities for decades, although they paid all taxes in full. Others like perceived Tea Party groups may be blocked (silenced) by the IRS for their political beliefs, before they could even have a chance to file tax reports.

And those who refuse to pay income taxes due to their outspoken moral and constitutional principles, such as Irwin Schiff, are jailed – and then forced to die in jail from untreated cancer. So much for the U.S. system being “voluntary”. You can be a conscientious objector to the draft! But not to the federal income tax.

I could try to tell more of Irwin Schiff’s story, but Peter Schiff does it best in his article, Death of a Patriot. Read the whole thing.

And consider downloading and reading Irwin Schiff’s last book, The Federal Mafia: How the Government Illegally Imposes and Unlawfully Collects Income Taxes. It’s free.

It’s free because, during Schiff’s lifetime, the government enjoined him from selling it. That makes it a banned book; indeed, it’s supposed to be the only book banned in the U.S. in the last 50 years (other than libel cases).

The book also claims that the U.S. income tax system is voluntary. I must suggest that Mr. Schiff’s own experience shows that, as a practical matter, he was mistaken about that. But he covers the history of the income tax in the U.S. and the IRS’ own use of the word “voluntary”. As such, Schiff may well have been right about the underlying Constitutional principle, or what *should theoretically* be true under the U.S. Constitution (which today’s U.S. government flouts in many ways).

Anyway, the book’s unusual ban, and Schiff’s cruel death in federal prison, should tell you something about our government’s true priorities. Hint: It’s much more to do with protecting the government’s power and jobs, than protecting or serving you.

Harry Reid’s Democrat Ethics

Harry Reid admits that he lied on the floor of the Senate about Mitt Romney not paying his taxes, but says it’s okay because it helped Romney lose. (He also lied that his 2010 Republican Opponent was “pro-rape.”)

BASH (on camera): So no regrets about Mitt Romney, about the Koch brothers? Because some people have even called it McCarthy-ite.
REID: Well, they can call it whatever they want. Romney didn’t win, did he?

Harry Reid claims to be a member of the LDS Church. The 13th Article of Faith of the LDS Church reads as follows:

We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men.

Every two years, Harry Reid, as a member of the church, must be interviewed by his local Bishop and asked if he is constant and true in his devotion to the beliefs and principles of his church.

I understand why it’s more important to Harry Reid to embrace the “Lie, cheat, steal, and win at any cost” ethos of the Democrat Party than to be faithful to his church. At his core, he’s just plain greedy; a man who has never worked outside “public service” and yet has amassed a great fortune. Alleged Roman Catholic Nancy Pelosi is no different in her rejection of Catholic teachings on abortion; because her true god is power.

I am disappointed that the LDS Church has never taken him to task for his un-Christian behavior.

Charles Koch Speaks

We allowed the Eich/Mozilla brouhaha to obscure this, but it addresses the same underlying problem: the fascist intolerance of the “progressive” Left.

Last week, one of the Koch brothers responded to Harry Reid’s outrageous attacks demonizing them:

Charles Koch: I’m Fighting to Restore a Free Society

Updated April 2, 2014 7:47 p.m. ET

I have devoted most of my life to understanding the principles that enable people to improve their lives. It is those principles—the principles of a free society—that have shaped my life, my family, our company and America itself.

Unfortunately, the fundamental concepts of dignity, respect, equality before the law and personal freedom are under attack by the nation’s own government…[and] we have no choice but to fight for those principles. I have been doing so for more than 50 years, primarily through educational efforts. It was only in the past decade that I realized the need to also engage in the political process.

…In a truly free society, any business that disrespects its customers will fail, and deserves to do so. The same should be true of any government that disrespects its citizens. The central belief and fatal conceit of the current administration is that you are incapable of running your own life, but those in power are capable of running it for you…

More than 200 years ago, Thomas Jefferson warned that this could happen. “The natural progress of things,” Jefferson wrote, “is for liberty to yield and government to gain ground.” He knew that no government could possibly run citizens’ lives for the better. The more government tries to control, the greater the disaster, as shown by the current health-care debacle…

Instead of encouraging free and open debate, collectivists strive to discredit and intimidate opponents. They engage in character assassination. (I should know, as the almost daily target of their attacks.) This is the approach that Arthur Schopenhauer described in the 19th century, that Saul Alinsky famously advocated in the 20th, and that so many despots have infamously practiced…

…I have spent decades opposing cronyism and all political favors, including mandates, subsidies and protective tariffs—even when we benefit from them. I believe that cronyism is nothing more than welfare for the rich and powerful, and should be abolished…

He gives more, including some facts/details. (I’d reprint the article fully, except I haven’t obtained permission.) RTWT.

UPDATE: Also not to be missed is Kevin D. Williamson on The Liberal Gulag.

Welcome to the Liberal Gulag.

That term may be perverse, but it is not an exaggeration. Mr. [Adam] Weinstein [of Mother Jones] specifically called for political activists, ranging from commentators to think-tank researchers, to be locked in cages as punishment for their political beliefs. “Those denialists should face jail,” he wrote. “You still can’t” — banality alert! — “yell ‘fire’ in a crowded theater. You shouldn’t be able to yell ‘balderdash’ at 10,883 scientific journal articles a year.” “Balderdash” — a felony. At the risk of being repetitious, let’s dwell on that for a minute: The Left is calling on people to be prosecuted for speaking their minds regarding their beliefs on an important public-policy question that is, as a political matter, the subject of hot dispute. That is the stuff of Soviet repression.

And much more.

For The Democrats, Derangement Is Now the Norm

Deranged rants from the Democrat Majority Leader of the United States Senate have become a daily occurrence; and no one on the left has taken Harry Reid aside to discuss his behavior.

There was once a time when this kind of deranged lunacy was confined to whackjob websites like DailyKos and the Democratic Underground. It’s now the Democrat mainstream and is spoken on the floor of the US Senate. It is possible that the Democrat base can no longer distinguish insane behavior from normal.

Harry Reid Blames Obamacare Failure on “You Dumb Hicks Who Don’t Know How to Internet.”

Oh, yeah, he went there.

According to Supreme Commissar and Leader Harry Reid, “the fault of struggling to sign up on the Obamacare exchanges didn’t lie with the faulty website, but with the people who weren’t educated on how to use the Internet.”
Shame on all of you for letting President Obama down.

Now Democrats *like* charges that people are “un-American”

Democrats: could you please make up your minds?

Is it cool with you, or not cool, if charges are hurled around that so-and-so is un-American? Are y’all really so unprincipled that your answer shifts wildly, with your own momentary political convenience?

Mediaite goes into a couple of recent examples. Such as: Sen. Harry Reid (D – Nevada), Political Whore and Liar Extraordinaire, proclaiming officially on the floor of the Senate that the Koch brothers are “un-American”, basically because the Democrats don’t like what the Kochs say and do politically (never mind about Free Speech, fully legal political participation, etc.). It comes around 2:20 in Mediaite’s first clip.

Classic Harry Reid on taxes

Via Zero Hedge. Squirming under the Socratic questioning of interviewer Jan Helfeld, Sen. Reid argues here that because the U.S. tax system is cumbersome (having people self-report, having deductions, often using civil penalties rather than criminal, etc.), it’s somehow “voluntary”; that is, somehow not based on the government taking your money under a threat of force:

Worst Senate Leader Ever.

I’m 98% sure there is another post in the GayPatriot archives with this exact same headline. Because I must say it to someone EVERY DAY.

The incompetence of Harry Reid is one thing. But now he sounds more like Keith Olbermann than the second highest ranked Democrat in the USA. Reid is either clinically insane or senile — I mean “the word is out,” after all!!

The one thing Reid proves everyday, he is a disgrace to the Senate and the state of Nevada.

-Bruce (GayPatriot)

UPDATE (from Dan):  Bruce, how many day is it since Harry Reid’s Senate passed a budget?  Is the streak under the Nevada Democrat the longest in Senate history?  Oh, and has he released his tax returns for the past ten years?
