On the Confederate monuments: Be careful what you ask for

August 22, 2017 by Jeff (ILoveCapitalism)

The U.S. Civil War killed or maimed huge numbers of people – as a proportion of how many people were alive, then. I’m told that, for two generations after the war, you would walk down the street in almost any U.S. city and see veterans missing an arm or leg, or women who were veterans’ widows.

After the war, the point of statues on both sides was to remember the sacrifice of those who had fallen. Both sides were American. Both fought because they thought they had a point.

The war was not about slavery until 1863 (well into it). The South fought to preserve the States against an encroaching central government. They lost – only after President Lincoln claimed a moral high ground, by finally making it a war to end the evil of slavery. Before then, in 1861 and 1862, the constitutional issues were primary and the South had a point. In short, they were not evil for fighting. They were Americans, fighting from a place of moral conviction (however mistaken).

The point of the Confederate monuments is to remember all that. The people whom you oppose so deeply are fellow Americans and they often (not always) come from a place of moral conviction (however mistaken).

It follows that the real effect of removing the Confederate monuments is to forget all that. Removal makes a statement that only one side matters: Your side, membership in which gives you the right to spit upon, and eventually to erase, your fellow Americans.

Whether a particular city or college or State should keep monument X is a local issue, that I won’t have an opinion on. But the overall push to remove the Confederate monuments is disturbing: it’s a push for ignorance and incivility. Forgetting the past, that’s the ignorance. And having only one side matter (yours) – that’s the incivility.

So, lefties: Be careful what you ask for. I will leave you with Charles Barkley’s perspective:

And Diamond and Silk’s perspective.

Once more, the media lied to me

April 25, 2017 by Jeff (ILoveCapitalism)

The last few weeks, I’ve explored the so-called “alt-Right” a little. Not joining it per se, just looking at material produced by people who are supposed to be it.

I keep having the same, strange experience. I’m told that these people are supposed to be neo-Nazi white nationalist fringies. But they aren’t! Milo, Mike Cernovich, the handsome Jack Posobiec, Rebel Media, Breitbart.com, Diamond and Silk, Jesse Lee Peterson – None of them are like that.

For sure, my search isn’t objective. When I come across some web site or material that starts to get racial – like, say, therightstuff dot biz – I go “Ugh!” and don’t look much further. Because assigning importance to race is dumb, whether it’s from the Left or the Right, I usually don’t want to waste my time on people/sites that do it. (Fuller comment in this thread.)

So I’m sure there must be some swathe of the alt-Right, somewhere, that gets racist. But again: left-wing protestors and media promised me that the names mentioned above would be that way… and they just aren’t.

As to the alt-Right: the names mentioned above talk about it in much the same way, like “I don’t know if I’m part of it. If it’s white nationalists, I’m out. If it’s challenging the Left / Deep State / Big Government / globalists in ways that are persuasive and fun, I’m in.” That’s roughly how I feel.

A study in contrasts

November 11, 2016 by Jeff (ILoveCapitalism)

Two black women support LEGAL immigration (as do I), border security and Donald Trump. About a year ago they felt angry – and expressed themselves peacefully. (h/t CrayCrayPatriot for telling me about them)

That’s good.

Now for the contrast: Shamefully, two black men this week beat up a (perceived? real or imagined?) Trump voter. (h/t Zero Hedge and InfoWars)

That’s a disgrace.

The difference here isn’t race. Isn’t era. Isn’t oppression-privilege “experience” or dynamics. Isn’t anger level. Probably isn’t even gender, all that much (since some women do fight, and many men don’t).

The key difference is IDEAS – and MORAL CHARACTER.

As Aristotle is supposed to have said:

Anybody can become angry – that is easy, but to be angry with the right person and to the right degree and at the right time and for the right purpose, and in the right way – that is not within everybody’s power and is not easy.

Exit question: Are Hillary or President Obama out there, telling people in no uncertain terms to calm down and accept the election’s outcome? (If yes: I’m glad, and feel free to post the link in the comments.)

UPDATE: Via ZH, a high school girl is attacked (by another high school girl) for supporting Trump. Pathetic!
