Evolution of a Millennial

March 21, 2016 by V the K

When I met “Marcus” in the spring of 2011, he was 21 years old and a doctrinaire liberal leftist. He voted for Obama in 2012 mainly because, in his own words, “to think the Democrats for gay marriage.”

Since then, he has finished college and currently works in the field of higher education. Over the last few years, his views on a few matters have changed.

He used to think favorably on social justice, believing that basic equality was something the government should be active in promoting. He now thinks that social justice warriors are insane, feminists are stridently anti-male, and #BlackLivesMatter is a hate group. He no longer considers himself a liberal.

He used to believe in all of the diversity and multiculturalism he was indoctrinated with. Now, he thinks that diversity, in and of itself, should not be the highest priority in any organization. Working under a couple of incompetent Affirmative Action bosses and living in a neighborhood where drug deals happened in the parking lot of his apartment complex brought him around to this position.

As an atheist, he used to hate all religions equally; but he now sees Islam as the worst of the lot, even worse than Scientology. Individual Muslims are okay, he thinks, but Islam itself is, in his words, a “gutter religion.”

He honestly does not like Hillary Clinton, whom he views as corrupt, dishonest, and mean. He likes Bernie Sanders, but thinks his economic policies are completely unrealistic. He is afraid of Donald Trump, and think Ted Cruz would institute a “Theocracy” (though he cannot explain how Cruz would accomplish this remarkable feat). He expects that he will ignore the presidential election and cast his vote on the down-ballot politicians and issues.

The plural of anecdote is not data, but if one Millennial can evolve based on real-world experiences, maybe others can as well.
